I mentioned on here a while back that we were getting a very irritating squeaking sound from somewhere underneath our Versa SL hatchback. By riding in the backseat while my wife drove, I was able to move my ear around and get a pretty good idea of where it was coming from. I could tell that it was somewhere around the rear suspension/exhaust area. The problem was that when the car was parked and I would crawl under it, I was never able to replicate the noise. Well today I got sick of it. It was driving me nuts and it was making our beautiful new car sound cheap and junky. I backed the car up onto a set of work ramps and I crawled back under. After grabbing and shaking everything I could, I finally figured out what it was! There is a thin metal heat shield that sits between the exhaust pipe and the gas tank. That heat shield has a little "play" in it and I could move it around. At one spot where it is connected to the under-side of the car, it is attached with screws that come down through these little clip things. By sqeezing the clips onto the screws tighter, I was able to stiffen up the heat shield. We took the car for another ride and PRAISE GOD THE SQUEAKING IS GONE!!! So if anyone hears an irritating squeeking sound from under your Versa, check your heat shield.
