The past couple days when i go to start my 1990 n/a sometimes i have to wait just a second after i put the key in to turn it over to start it. If i do it too soon i have to turn the key back and try it again. I thought 'no problem im just going too fast' until today when it wouldnt start at all. it has power, gas, all that good stuff. im just thinking its something with the actual key or something in the steering column maybe a wire came loose? anyone else experience this?

Take off the plastic around the column and see if any wires are loose from the ignition cylinder itself. There's a how-to somewhere on removing it. Sounds like maybe a wire was loose and eventually broke/came off.

so the problem was neither the ignition or starter, but the wiring from the fuse relay to the starter. just FYI in case anyone else runs into this problem.

Yeah that tends to be a problem from time to time... the original wiring on these cars gets brittle from age/heat and can cause problems like this.
