Hi,

so im new to this forum, i recently purchased a 1991 300zx tt automatic. everything about the car is nice and stock. maintenance records since 91 from previous owner. however, when i got it i was informed that the speedometer went out (which after reading several threads i find pretty common for the Z's). I've checked the speedo sensor (on the transmission) tach working, odometer/trip meter working, boost gauge, oil pressure gauge working. so at this point i feel its safe to say that its the speedometer thats busted (could be wrong pointers are welcome :) ).

ive been looking to replace the entire gauge cluster however i read a few other threads on other forums and some people are saying that the conectors and screw holes on some z's are different than others. which leads me to my two questions 1.) is this true? 2.) how do i find out which one i need?

installation is not an issue since i see you guys have extensive info on the subject. thanks in advanced for looking and for all your help :wavey:

probably the gauge is shot.my cluster just went, speedo was 10mph off at first, then the trip odo stopped working, then it all stopped. just get a new cluster from the same year and type zx.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick responce. that would be ideal, find a cluster that is from my year Z. however its proving harder than it sounds to do. When i look on Ebay or other sites, They say that the cluster fits Z's 90-96, however ive read on other forums that certain Z's have different rectangular plugs in the back

i found this picture that shows the different arrangements of the plugs. was wondering if this would affect my installation. or does the orientation of those rectangular plugs not matter? its become pretty frustrating looking for this part hahaha. id hate to order it and have it not fit. others have told me the only way to find out it to tear it apart look and put it back together. id like to save myself and others that pain so it would be nice to find some way to tell which cluster i have without first having to rip it apart.

Thanks again for your help :)

plugs should still be the same, just looks like they are turned 90 degrees.

as a last resort you can get a cluster with the plugs and wires and proceed to splice it into your dash replacing the original plugs...

As far as I know, TT clusters are different than NA clusters. Also air-bag equipped clusters are different than those without airbags (may just be for the airbag warning light?). I'm pretty sure thats the only differences. 1996 may have also had different clusters because of the OBD2 switch but I'm just guessing on that one.

also i did notice the very bottom of the clusters are different, some have a more square shape and others are a nice sweep. im talking about right near the column where the speedo hits it...

90 cluster do not have the dummy lights, and I think 91's. They have the dummy lights on the bezel, not in the cluster. 92 and newer have them in the cluster, cleaner look personally. I don't know if they interchange.
