For you who are in a Z33 or Z34.. you have noticed that your final drive gear ratio is rather low. 3.538 and 3.692 for z33 and z34 respectively.

I recommend you guys take a peek at this:

Quote »Let me first say.... This is by far the BEST mod i have done to my NA car...

You turbo guys will understand ( remember the chills that went up your back when you first drove your FI car?? ) Thats me

First, 2nd and third gears are amazing. The car pulls sooo much harder now. I cant wait to get it to the track rental next friday. I have my ECU reflashed to the 7200 Rpm Redline.

Here is a break down of the STOCK gear ratio's

1st Gear Ratio: 3.794:12nd Gear Ratio: 2.324:13rd Gear Ratio: 1.624:14th Gear Ratio: 1.271:15th Gear Ratio: 1.000:16th Gear Ratio: 0.794:1-Reverse Ratio: 3.446:1

This is calculated using 255/45/17 Tires

Update on the Gears..

Put over 200 highway miles on the car this past weekend and was able to average 29 mile to the gallon. Not bad at all. I would of thought the 4.083 gears would have really killed my gas tank.

Also, driving around town I am able to average around 22mpg. If I drive it like i stole it, then its around 18mpg.
Someone swapped a 4.083 and likes the acceleration of a NA motor and still maintains a reasonable gas mileage. It also list other people who have experience the same with switching final drives to a higher number.

And since a very square moderator deleted the link, I will show the links that were included with the one link.

Quote »I'm happy to say that I got my 4.083 final drive gears and Carbonetics CF LSD installed at Lokey Infiniti this week. Big thanks to John Oliva, Doug Urban, and of course Christian for actually doing the work! It's a mod that Lokey doesn't do on a regular basis, but they have the equipment and knowledge to do it, and they did a great job on mine.

I bought the Nismo 4.083 final drive gears, Carbonetics Carbon Fiber Limited Slip Differential, ATS gear oil, and Nismo rear end cover from Adam at Z1 Performance. Thanks for the help and great service, Adam.

Also, thanks to Todd (aceman) for posting his findings with the 4.083 gears. If you are considering these gears, make sure you read Todd's Thread first.

I have been planning to change the rear end gears in my G for quite a while. I originally planned to get a set of the 3.91 gears, but decided to go with the 4.083 gears when it turned out that they would fit my housing, too. The 4.083 gears come OEM in a Nissan Frontier. I've also thought about getting a better differential from time to time, so this seemed like the perfect time to swap that out too.

The new 4.083 gears really increase the acceleration in my G. It makes quite a noticeable difference... they definitely up the fun-to-drive number! The mechanical advantage the gears add is more than I expected. The difference in speed in each gear dropped a bit... 80 miles per hour in sixth gear used to be 3,000 RPM on the tach, now it's 3,400.

The Carbonetics LSD is much quieter than I was expecting. No noise and no clunking when making sharp turns. I haven't fully broken the diff in yet, so I'll know more about that in the future. The only downside to the Carbonetics LSD is that it requires fluid changes every 3,000 miles and ATS highly recommends using their fluid. I'll just change it with the oil.

If you love driving your car and shifting, this is a great mod for you! If you hate shifting, you probably didn't get a 6mt and this mod is probably not for you. Anyway... It makes an incredible difference... and I love it!
Quote »I went up to Function Tuned today to swap top the 3.3 FD. Let me start by saying thanks Dave and Juan it took about 1.5 hours to do it, very straight forward. Drop the rear section of the APS TD exhaust, loosen the axle bolts on both sides and its 3 bolts that hold the pumpkin up.

I was worried with the slight reduction (about 6%) in TQ multiplication my car would feel "slow"...I know 500+whp cant feel slow but Ive read mixed reviews from forum members, some like it, others feel like the car struggles some up top. Last thing I wanted was for my car to feel like it was dogging out at the top of 4th or 5th. So my impressions....

Today was the warmest day we have had the past 2 weeks, when I took the car out it was around 50-55 degrees, on the way up to FT traction was horrible in 1-3rd gears, so on the highway Id have to start at about 60mph in 4th not to spin. First drive----> I hit it from 2nd gear, and I was highly surprised, it spun but not in the viscious way it usually does (like it does in 1st gear), the car still moved forward instead of going completely sideways, almost like a 70% spin/30% traction-MUCH better here. I can now ease into 2nd with no issues-just peddle it a little. In 3rd now, I have no traction issues, immediately the car rockets forward from a 60mph up to 100mph(stock in 3rd is 88mph) when I grab 4th. I love 4th now as it pulls nasty as hell to 130mph (stock is 112mph). Overall I highly like/recommend this mod, the car doesnt even feel 1% slower to me, even up top in 3rd, 4th or 5th. Even at 45mph in 3rd (thats 25mph under the new redline in 2nd) the car takes off as if the gearing werent longer at all. I highly recommend this to anybody with 500+whp the gearing feels like it should be for our power levels, Im on decent tires-KDW 2's, not even summer compounds, and Im at -2.0 degrees rear camber and my traction now feels like it did before in 80+degree heat. I think in summer time with better compound tires the car will hook from 2nd gear with no issues. 3rd gear highway blasts are just nasty-traction was still good later in the night with temps in the low 40's.
Quote »Well guys, I finally gave in and threw a 3.91 equipped diff in my car.I was trying to wait until a new helical limited slip hit the market later this year, but I had a full rear diff w/ vlsd dropped in my lap, so I swapped in the 3.91 gears into that setup and bolted it up.

My observations on the vlsd:

The limited slip was LONG overdue. If I wasn't trying to hold out for the helical unit (and I'm still going to upgrade as soon as it's available), I'd have done this a LONG time ago. The older carrier swapped right in my 07 without any issues. If someone else has already reported this and I missed it, I'm sorry for the repost.

My observations on the gears:

First gear revs out very quickly now. I've hit the rev limiter a few times over the last few days because of it. Acceleration doesn't feel that much different and I'm not sure if it's due to tire spin, or if my butt dyno is just off. Second gear feels a little quicker acceleration wise and it's a bit shorter. I can still get to 60+ in 2nd gear (if you care about 0-60 times). Third gear is where the change is immediately noticeable. The car pulls MUCH harder in third now. Fourth through Sixth are also much quicker and the change is very noticeable. The car pulls easier through the gears and I can even cruise below 2k rpms in 6th gear and it'll pull out without bogging down.

Highway cruising at 80mph went up approx 300rpms, so it's not bad at all.

Overall, I'm very happy with the results. I'll get some numbers up in the next week or so, once I'm able to hit the track.
Quote »About a couple of weeks ago I purchased a pumpkin with a 350EVO 3.9FD & oem VLSD installed (actually it was a used setup that had around 5000 miles on it + the final drive gear was installed in the pumpkin by 350EVO). Yesterday I got around to installing this on to my car. Here are my impressions:

1)Performance:All I have to say is WOW. F*cking WOW. The reason why I went with the 3.9 instead of the 3.5 or the 3.7 is because I wanted performance you can feel and this is exactly what I received. Going from a 3.3VLSD to a 3.9VLSD made quite a noticeable difference in the feel and response of my 5AT (actually more than I expected). The response of the car has improved dramatically and it has made an improvement throughout the rev range. I fly through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. With the 3.3VLSD it felt like it was taking too long to get to the meaty part of the powerband, especially after my osiris reflash with the 7200 rpm limit. The 3.9FD took care of this. WOT in 1st & 2nd gives me a lot of wheelspin . Rolling on the throttle in 2nd will break the tires loose (and will get the rear light). The car accelerates harder in every gear. There is one onramp where I go WOT (with the 3.3FD) from 1st-3rd and I am able to hit 90 before merging on the highway. Now on the same road I am hitting 95-97 (@7200 rpm in 3rd) before merging on the highway. I am going to the track next friday to see if I can quantify the improvement .

This is by far the best mod I have done to this car. I'll probably go with the 4.08's after I go with a more aggressive set of cams. IMO this will be the perfect mod for any 5AT VQHR motor.

2)Streetability:I know some of you had some reservations about with a 3.9FD in the 5AT but believe me this setup is VERY STREETABLE. It never feels like I am always revving out the car. It feels like a more responsive 5AT G35. This mod makes city driving much more enjoyable and I can get around cars on the highway a lot easier without downshifting. With the 3.3FD the car was dull at low revs and I would have to either downshift or add a lot more gas to speed up or to get around cars. Now I can increase my speed at low revs with a small tap of the gas. This alone will help improve my mpg (less load) in the city as well as save some wear & tear on my car.

As expected my cruise control does not work (the light just blinks when the button is pressed) but I wont be missing it since my right foot does a better job. So far my mpg has gone down only because I can not keep my foot off the gas . I'm expecting my highway mpg to go down slightly but I'm also expecting an improvement in my city mpg. I didn't buy this car to save gas. When the converter locks the rpms are higher than before (80 is @ 3300-3400 rpm) however its not really bothersome and I'll take the tradeoff for the performance. I also have a slight whine when crusing at a steady speed. I did some research on this subject and I found out that this is because the pumpkin was setup with a little more offset (looser backlash) with the shims. This was intentionally set up this way by 350EVO since it allows for cooler operation of the diff. In a nutshell, the looser (more offset) the gear has, the cooler it runs, but adds to the chance of a rearend whine and the tighter (less offset), the hotter it runs, but lessens the chance of gear whine. The whine is only present when I give it steady throttle and it disappears when I let off or when I go WOT.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give a detailed review for anyone thinking about this for their 5AT.
Quote »Well I have an 06 n/a Z. Rev up with testies, catback, mrev 2 and 5/16 spacer, tuned by a utec...

I wanted some more GRUNT....so I looked into the 4.08 gear options...I studied hard and decided to purchase them..

ADAM at Z1 ROCKS in LONG ISLAND, NY...

I had them installed and here is my review...

My uncorrected dyno numbers are below and the car moved before....NOW it is really sick...such quick acceleration through out the gears....

LIGHTINING QUICK....like ACEMAN said only about 500 rpm diff through out...

IT really allows you to be in any gear and take adv. of teh VQ's rev range and low end tq....

What a mod..I highly recommend it to anyone staying N/A....

Track times to come !!!!

p.s: Not that I condone SR..but I did happen to encounter a S/C 02 Gt...and from 20-90...he loses.....
Quote »Okay so today was a long day, woke up at 6am, got ready by 7am and breakfast and hit the road by 8am with my friend. Arrived at the installation place (SRT in Beltsville, MD) talked to Moe and dropped my car off. This was around 9:15am. Whole day goes by, me and my friend are running around Beltsville all day eating Subway, drinking Robeks and just goofing off. Finally time comes around 5:45pm to finally pick up my car!

So I pay, for anyone wondering it costed me $495.00 only because the bearing on my G35 was really hard to remove and they had to take it to an another shop to get it removed, otherwise it usually runs for about $380.00 dollars to get it installed. Anyways... on to the good stuff..

HOLY F*CK!

The car pulls like no other, I don't know how to explain it -- it really makes the G35 that much more fun to drive, sure the revs are up a little but honestly you're not wasting that much more gas, it's nothing.

The G35 should have came like this stock. The first time I mashed it, I never felt my car lift and just fling me wherever my heart pleases. Like Aceman said... like people with F/I... the smile you get after mashing it, is the same smile I got.

This is also my first "performance" modification on my G, and already I know it is by far the best money I have spent so far. I have no plans on going F/I so these gears really suit me well.

If you have any doubt in your mind about this modification, drop it. There is nothing to worry or yap about -- the G really grew some balls with this modification.

As you can see, I am very pleased with this as my first modification -- matter of fact I suggest anyone that is planning to stay N/A, get this mod -- and get it FAST.

Thanks to Adam from Z1 for helping me get it quickly, thanks to Aceman for discovering this and sharing this gem with the community and thanks to _jb for helping me throughout all this.

and to end this review... Gentlemen...START YOUR ENGINES!! THE MODDING CRAZE HAS JUST BEGUN!
Just thought I spread the word to those who are looking for more out of their NA motor setups. :bowrofl:

I agree a higher ratio diff is a great addition.

I do a lot of lonf distance driving with my ( hundreds of miles on end) and am a bit worried about always running my compressor at ever higher revs.

If I was NA would be one of my first Mods.

good read.

if you were thinking of going as low-geared as the 3.9-4.1 range, from the looks of those numbers, i guess you could drive around without using 6th gear to get a feel for whether or not it would be for you... the Z's my only transoprtation, so i think i'd miss it.
