RyanT, check out Chet's 'tire questions' sticky. Also, the quick definition is:

Offset: the positive or negative distance(measured in metric) from the wheel centerline to the mounting surface of the wheel. This distance is critical, because it will determine where a tire/wheel will 'sit' in the wheel well. A high offset wheel usually means a FWD application, or a wheel that will be tucked in the fender. A lower offset will place the wheel/tire assy farther outward. Too high(numerically) of an offset(+40, and higher) with a wider than stock wheel may place the wheel/tire assy too close to your suspension, and might rub. Too low of an offset on aftermarket wheel/tires may push the assy too far out, and cause rubbing on the fender.

The only way to know is to measure how much room you have left to lower the car with whatever wheels and tires you have on the car. It's sort of a chicken and egg thing. Depending on what the wheel offset is, a 245 is going to be snug up front even with a stock ride height. Mount them up and measure:xfingers

im not sure at what point this becomes a consideration, but the body roll around turns can make the tires rub

will 235 tires fit 8 inch wide wheels? would that be better for the front?

Without trying to be a smart #$$, I think the point everyone is trying to make here is that a 17X8 is going to be a very wide fitment for this car with any offset. Even more so if you are going to try and stick a 245 up front. If you are planning to lower the car, that's going to be an even tighter fit. If you are looking at a specific 17X8 wheel, the shop should be able to tell you what offset they know will work on your car based on what they have test fit on that car. If they can't tell you that, you are dealing with the wrong people. Online auction sites are littered with used wheels that didn't fit. Deal with a shop that knows what they are doing and have actually test fit the wheels. When it comes to fitting a car, there is a lot more to it than just the bolt pattern and offset.

I'm going to assume this is not an SE model and we are looking at the 4-lug car. The stock tire is a 195/65-15 (around 24.2" O.D.) a 245/45-17 is a 25.7 O.D. tire. A 235/45-17 is still 25.3 O.D. That is why I said you'll have to test fit this wheel and tire combo on the car and then measure to see how much room (if any) is left to lower the car. Again, chicken and the egg. I'm not trying to be critical here, it's just that it sounds like you are getting good information from whoever is trying to sell you these 17X8 wheels. We don't want to see you get the wheels and find out they won't work. That would stink and we would have to hunt down the shop that messed you up and, well, it would be ugly:bash

I am running 245/40/17's in back ight now on a 17x8" wheel with +35 offset. They fit fine. Im running 215/45/17 in front on 7.5" rims and dont really see the need for anything wider in front. the rears are some non directional sumitomos so I can rotate side to side at least since my open diff tends to wear the tires uneven.
