I have a 1993 Q45. It's a great car, haven't had a single problem until one day the shifts seemed a little laggy, then it started shifting into 3rd a little later and a little later. now it no longers shifts into 3rd or any gear above that. I can drive in 1st and 2nd only . Any ideas as to what needs to be replaced? Car has 168,000miles on it. The tranny fluid was pretty crappy when i changed it. (probably never been changed or only changed a few times). Anyway, i am hoping someone went through this before so I know what could be the problem. Brought it to AAMCO (bastards) and they said it would be atleast 1800 just to pull the tranny out and even if i decided not to fix the problem, thats how much i would be charged. This seems outrageous. Anyone have any ideas? Located in HB california.

You get a Nissan rebuilt one from http://www.everythinginfiniti.com and replace the rear engine main seal while you are at it.

Adding an external cooler is a good idea also.

If it still shifts to 1-2 its possible maybe your shift solenoids are bad... its a $150 part... Is it worht the $150 in parts and maybe $100 in labor to replace?? thats your call, but id try that first personally

If your tranny still kind of works but doesnt show signs of complete failure its worth a shot...

Check the fluid. if it's burnt the clutches are toast and you will need a rebuild. If you don't want to spend a lot of money just get a Japanese pullout. Some of the places will even install.

Indeed... Youll spend less, and the warranty on the rebuilds are only a year (from the factory).. If a Jap pullout has 40k, no doubt it should go for a REAL long time......

Welcome to the Bad Tranny Club.... and this ain't men dressed as a women misbehavin!

Your tranny has enough miles to be considered at the end of it's useful life. Time for a replacement.

Eventually I'll have time to go pick up a Japanes take-out, for now I'm just doing my homework and driving my truck around.

A few links for your perusal...

You can find a JDM(Japanese) tranny with between 30,000 and 40,000 miles on it for $400 - $700, have it shipped for $200, and installed for $800, so tell AAMCO to shove it and get on these nuts!! They will rip you off and not even install it right either. Everything is on the westcoast as far as JDM trannies so take your time and you'll find something.

Sounds like you tranny has issues. My TPS sensor just went up and it did cause some tranny issues, but you problem doesn't sound related.

Yeah, it was totally F'ed as far as fluid. It's leaking now too. i don't really care that much except i'm driving around my rear-ended 510.. makes me sad with no radio... trust me, speed is no replacement for a radio... well sometimes it is (ortega highway & palos verdes north)

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. I found another tranny for 500 and i can install it (well, i've done engine swaps on a couple 240sxs and my datsun, so i think i can do this.) Is there anything i need to know when swapping the new tranny in?

Might as well purchase another tranny mount as well.
