All I hear is a click no matter how many times I turn the switch. I've had two different opinions of it being the starter or the solenoid, but I can't tell what the problem is.

Why do you doubt is the starter or starter solenoid? I'd make sure it's not just a dead battery first, try jump starting the car, or putting a battery charger on the battery and then see if it cranks.

If it just clicks like that it's a high chance of it being the starter itself. I would take it off and take it into shop to have it tested. I know autozone will test them, or at least they did 2 years ago.

Yeah, they still do and I do believe it is the starter.

Same problem. But my starter is good. So I think it's a solenoid, but I can't locate it. '95 J30.

On a VG30 the solenoid is part of the starter, it's an assembly. Someone may correct me, but I seem to recall the solenoid terminal has a wire, so it can't be tripped with a screwdriver to test it. However, you can trip the battery terminal to the motor terminal to see if the motor spins. If it does and you're getting a hard click from the solenoid, then either the solenoid ring contact is bad or your engine is seized and preventing the starter from turning. If it's the ring contact or the motor isn't spinning, either way, you replace or rebuild the starter. If you do know for sure the starter is good and the engine isn't seized, then you have a problem upstream like a bad Starter Relay, Ignition Switch, or a bad starter cable.
