But, in another, Pakistan, they fly jets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...lated.

Change is happening ... slowly.

I saw the title and thought it would be something funny, sadly no. damn reality.

Maybe we should spread democracy...

Saudi Arabia still has "moral" police (the real term escapes me) that enforce all the various moray laws.Single women cannot walk with a man, they must be covered as to not temp the men, and mercy killings still take place. It's another culture they do what works for them and we need to leave them be. It's a shame but they have to change on their own, when it's right for them.

There are a lot of human rights things in the world these days and the US has a colorful record imposing our will unto others.

Yes.

Fortunately, change is happening ... slowly. There are still backward steps (see other thread of women killed for "honor" - complete crap !), but progress.

I don't think that most Americans can comprehend the fact that many of the Middle Eastern countries have been in existence and operating the same way for a significant amount of time before our continent was discovered. It is a society based on ancient religious morals and that needs to be respected.

I am all for equal opportunities for men and women of any sexual orientation. I think that we all have an inherent right to happiness. Some countries don't share that though. Someday America will catch up with the times.

I'm still kind of new and I have to look into that one, it drives me nuts reading some of the older threads I want to participate but don't want to bring something back that everyone else has already discussed. Thanks for the tip sounds like a good read.

Steve- Welcome to this area of the forum. I would suggest trying the search for a topic. If you don't see one that fits, try starting one. As long as you don't come out of the starting gate being too hostile, we'll either go straight from there or link you to a previous thread. Sometimes both.

The moderators that participate here are excellent at that sort of thing.

Thanks for the tip. I'm still a bit of a newb, Ill just respond to threads in the politics forums until I get a chance to go through and read previous topics. I would like to only bring up new topics and not be redundant.

NICO is great in the aspect of having people from all over the continent with varying opinions, the great thing is that we all have one great thing in common. That is a general interest in Nissans/Infinitis, I look forward to being involved in many conversations in this forum.

Its the reason we are talking about it here in this forum. It's a good cross section of people there are many ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds here.

The political section I think may be slightly different I don't know what the average demographic of this area in particular is.

I have been here for only a month and I really enjoy the discussions here. There are many well thought out topics, and for the most part everyone has an interesting POV.

We tend to get a bit heated in our discussions here though!

Because politics tends to make us a bit extreme in many ways ...

That is exactly what I have been looking for. Wife and friends don't like to argue I need an outlet and another point of view. I look forward to chiming in from time to time. I just got my own laptop recently and the next day joined NICO, still a newb by most aspects but I'm not slow and politics is my favorite thing to discuss.

I think we need Heliochrome to chime in here.

Is the "women driving cars" thing really part of Sharia (Islamic Law) or does it stem from something else?

WARNING: Unfiltered and probably unpopular opinion follows:

These, my friends, are the dangers of a theocracy. This is why legislating morality is a bad idea, because morality is ultimately ALWAYS subjective, no matter how universal certain values might seem. Murder isn't illegal because it's morally wrong, it's illegal because it is a behavior that infringes on the rights of other citizens (i.e. "right to LIFE, liberty, etc). Anything and everything that doesn't infringe on the rights of others needs to be legal (so flag burning, gay marriage, etc), regardless of how heretical it may seem when compared against the values of a given religion.

Not because these given behaviors are "right", but because to ban them simply due to majority disdain is wrong.

Because to do otherwise is a legal slippery slope that, if left unchecked, leads inevitably to a theocracy, which will lead inevitably to dictatorship. History has shown it to be IMPOSSIBLE to separate the two.

That is very true, It's sort of the direction this country is taking if our friends on the far right get there way. I think that reverting to a way of "traditional value" conflicts with the way I choose to live my life. Therefore infringing on my happienss.

As for the right to life are you getting at the right to choose, repealing Roe v. Wade will infringe on a womens right to happiness. It is a double edge sword and no matter what the outcome someone will not be happy.

We really need to address our domestic issues. It is a shame other countries are not as progressive as us, it's also disheartining that our great country is not as progressive and "with the times" as some other countries.

I understand this is a verytouchy subject and will not share my opinion more than I have, as I have read the sticky in politics and am not looking to get banned.

I'm not sure how to take that.. I guess I'm going to have to kneecap Greg at VIR..

It is the truth that there are some things that women can't do that men can, and that men can't do that women can. It's nature's law. However the fact that Islamic countries (some) see women as a secondary or tertiary human is beyond me. But, it is their culture.

One thing that escapes me, though, is the fact that America bends over backwards to try to not be offensive to ANY country in the world when we interact with them. How come they can't make the same concession for us. Or, are we just that weak that we want to be the kid that everybody likes?
