I found a software based consult type tool for the 300zx I wonder if it would work with the Q or how hard it would be to get the software. You can also download a sample of the software too!!! I would probably wreck the car playing with it on the laptop LOL but it would be nice to be able to tune and check everyhting!!!! without spending $90+ to goto the dumb dealer

Now that's pretty damn cool, and I'm a hard guy to suprise!I wonder how the emulation is performed. I'd bet if they had a Q45 Consult Card, they could read the data and emulate the Q45's diagnostics too.

How much was it?

The whole trick is knowing and understanding [in you head] what is normal and how each signal changes with rpm and load.

The newer OBD2 software gives you grams per second of air flowing through the MAF. The old OBD1 [90-95Q] gives you a voltage between 1.000 and 4.500.

The OBD2 software can pinpoint an exact cylinder misfire whereas the old will tell you which bank of 4 via the O2 sensor.

There are companies which make inexpensive [under $500] A to D convertors turning your PC into dual channel oscilloscopes, with acoustic software, they become spectrum anaylser for vibration analysis [with a $100 sensor]. Every rotating items has its on frequency spectrum if you know the frequency you can determine the problem item! Especially items below the range of human hearing.

A $150 amplified current probe can let you see the ramp up of injectors [exact opening closing points]or the pulses in transmission solenoids.

All the above can be rigged to tell you which cylinder is knocking first and and probably how to fix it.

Gotta have one of these! I sent an email to see if they're compatible - I'll let you know.

The product is really cool, but I like the idea of having a more robust setup like the one Dennis mentioned. Dennis, any particular recommendations in software and/or tools?

I got a reply from the Conzult folks...

"The unit was tested on a 92 (I believe) Q45 and it did not work properly, unfortunately :(

We haven’t tested the Q45 engine’s ourselves because we simply can’t because so far we know, there are no Q45’s in Europe (read: The Netherlands). I can say that we know the conZult IS going to work on a Q45 (as any other NISSAN with an consult plug/OBD1) but we have to work this out in our software. If we come to this we might need someone who’s willing to test for us on a Q45, so we will be back if we have some info.. See our site for updates on this matter soon : http://dta-motorsport.com

There have been at least a couple of first gen Q45 sighted in Germany (grey market?).

Could be, I have an US-spec ZX so there probebly will also be some US Q45's drive around, but we have to find one of these :)

Sounds more optimistic than the reply I got...

Q. Do you anticipate a Q-compatible model coming out in the near future?

Thanks!

Heath

A.In the near future, I doubt it. Since the Q45 isn't a popular vehicle in Europe, getting their hands on a test vehicle in Netherlands (where the software is made) is a bit difficult.

Well, I still wonder just how they are doing the emulation. If they are simply emulating the consult itself, then I'd guess you could just load the Consult PC Card for the Q and get the thing to work. (of course you'd need the proper connector and pinout).

Still pretty damn cool, I'd love a version just to run standard tests out of the service manual. It would be a lot easier than the multiple gyrations we all go through with out one.
