We have recently purchased a 2008 Altima 2.5 SL and love it, but the one thing that it is missing is a 12V outlet in the trunk so we can plug in our cooler (max draw is 6 Amps, working current is 4-4.8 Amps) when on holidays. My question is whether I can tap into power already in the trunk or do I/should I, run it back to the fuse box under the drivers dash? It appears that there is a couple of spots open but difficult to determine which open spot on the terminal block matches up with the empty fuse location. If I run it back to the fuse box it is a distance of approx. 8 feet or so...given the amperage draw of the cooler or a computer (less amps) I think I could use 18 gauge wire, but should I use 16 or 14? The lighter socket I got also has an inline fuse so I think the circuitry will be well protected. Any suggestions or experiences (+/-) would be of great help.

Thanks, cheers, Rickr57

You always put your fuse at the battery and should never use an existing line for a specialty application such as this.

16 gauge stranded copper is preferable because of the location. Make sure you have a rubber cap to cover the outlet for when it's not being used.

Thanks for the info and the outlet does have a cap.
