It looks like your relay in the diagram is either missing a terminal or you ommited it. the terminal number for a SPDT relay are as follows; 85 & 86 connected to opposite sides of the coil in the relay. 87, 87a, and 30 are the contact switch sides these are the supply and output terminals.

If you correctly connect the coil sides (one needs ground the other needs power 12v) you will hear it click as it moves the contact switch. It looks you switch in the picture is missing a connection to supply it with 12v, otherwise it would just supply ground to the other side of the already grounded coil side of the realy.

so i should get a 5-point relay right?...but what would the 87a actually power? the switch inside the car?

no you don;t have to have one with the 87a terminal, this is just the most common. I would just make sure that it is correctly connected. i.e. the coil side has both supply to a 12v power on one terminal and ground on the other during the cycle that should operate the fan. and for he switch side you are going to want to supply 12v and output 12v with the other.

In your diagram it looks like you switch supplies 12 ground to the other side of the coil of the relay. You connected both sides of the coil to ground, which indicates a possible reason the relay doesn't activate the fan. Make sure that the realy is capable of supplying at least 25 amps. Other wise go get a 5 terminal SPDT bocsh 30 amp relay.Do you still have ?s I'll try to help
