I'm planning on doing this swap this spring on my 96'. What I was wandering is there anyway to hook up everything how it is supposed to be without jumping wires or splicing into the harnesses? I've done an auto to 5spd swap before (Bronco II) and didn't like having to splice wires and such, ended up having to keep truck out of gear with clutch in to start.

I know alot of people have done the swap with leaving some stuff unhooked and others have jumped and spliced everything to work. I was just want to know is it physically possible to do with all the correct plugs, modules and crap? After reading some installs FAQs about the swap, I'm almost ready to just keep the auto. My luck I'd cut into the wrong wire and fry the computer or something and have to make payments on something I cant drive.

Let me know I appreciate any help you can give me.-Bill

The lower harness is different from a manual car to an auto car, and has different points to plug into on the chassis. Because of that, the sensors on the trans aren't plug and play. The only sensor that you can successfully plug and play will be the speed sensor. For the park/neutral switch to work, you have to jumper it to complete the circuit. As far as I know, there is no other way around that.

All you have to do to make it start is complete the starter circuit...usually you permanantly jumper the big 2-wire plug behind the fuse box.

Now, if you REALLY want the safety switch built in you should:

Get a bosch relay...

Hook the 2 wires from that 2-wire plug to the switched pins.

Hook a +12 ignition wire to the remote pin.

Then route the ground through the switch on the pedal.

...that way, when you press in the clutch pedal, it will ground the relay, and as you turn the key, the relay gets 12v power, completes the circuit, and starts the car.

Voila, just like factory...will take 15min to wire.

Search the web for boschg realy diagrams, so you know which pin is which...

What about the reverse lights? Also I read on the one install FAQs, about having to solder some wires to the ECU or TCM or something? Think, I read that on your site Orion. I take it the wires are run through the chassis, so there is no easy way to run the correct harness?

I like the Bosch relay idea, I'll look into it. That's one place where my Bronco II was nice, the clutch switch's harness is still in the automatics they just have a jumper block on them. You just plug it right into the clutch when you install it.

Hey Orion,

This may seem like a silly question but,

Does this mean that, while driving, every time you engage the clutch pedal, you are engaging the relay and grounding out the 12v supply and shorting out the battery?

Thanks a lot for any info.

so what your saying is, well before i start off with my question, let me state that i am in the middle of an sr auto to 5 speed swap and what im wanting to know is: should i use the 5 speed transmission harness that includes the alternator and starter wires, or leave the auto lower harness and then jumper the circuit for it to work?

because right now im using the 5 speed lower harness and whenever i jumper the circuit the starter stays engaged all the time

thanks

only if you turn the key to start when you shift.
