Ok so i have a rather old linksys wireless router that may or may not be the source of a rather annoying problem im having, every day or so my computers will lose their net connection. They still connect to the router but theres no data being sent, to correct this I have to unplug my router and cable modem let the modem reinitialize then plug my router back in. So is this a router or cable modem problem? Both are about 3+ years old.

Simple way to check would be to connect the modem directly to a computer and see if it still has problems. If no, then it quite possibly is the router.

Here's How:Click Start

Click Run..

Type 'cmd' (without the quotes) a command prompt window will come up.

'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address. Yes there is a space between IPconfig and /

Type 'ipconfig /renew'

This might work for you. If not come back on here

Ah yes i've used that command at work but never tried doing that at home. I'll have to wait and see if it works for me, thx for the replies.

Linksys routers do that sometimes when they overheat. Make sure you don;t have anything on top of it.

Now that you mention this the location I have it in is pretty enclosed, not something I thought of untill now. Guess if it happens again I will find a new spot for it thx Geo

I run the same type of setup at my house, the problem is always the cable modem though. My linksys router has never had a problem with over heating and handles power outages well, my router however sucks. I would call the cable company and ask them to test your broadband coaxial to see if there is a problem.

Overheating? Really? Hmmm, maybe thats why. Never heard of that before, I will have to try relocating for a while.
