Hi All-

I'm looking for some advice on how to winterize my I35.

After a lifetime living in the San Francisco/Bay Area, I'm taking a 1-year detour to western New York. I'm bringing my trusty 2002 I35 (160K miles) with me and was wondering if anyone here had pointers on what I can do to get my car ready for the snowy and cold winter up there. I'm particularly concerned b/c my car has been parked outdoor in the California sun for almost it's whole life and now being asked to experience its first cold northeast winter.

I'm hoping to get much of the mechanical work done here locally before leaving, but understand there are some items that will have to wait until the fall. Some items that came to mind include replacing some hoses, new battery, and a general tune-up/inspection.

Can anyone comment with general tips/advice on what I should get checked out/repaired/replaced/flushed/changed? Separately, do you think investing in a set of snow tires (even though I'm only going to be there for one year) would be worth it?

Thanks.

Poor I35

Might just want to sell it and get a truck

i would try to add another layer of undercoating to avoid rust from rock salt

Look for wiring which is exposed to the elements under the car. I have used
electrical wire covering "shrink wrap" to provide extra protection from wiring
exposed to rain etc. If I couldnt get the wrap on I would use electrical tape
as wiring protection. Do the same with all exposed electrical connectors.
Note the O2 sensors are supposed to breathe a little bit I think.

I have taken the safety shields, repainted, cleaned them up. Used 500 degree grill paint

Check exhaust system for looseness, holes etc

Run Chevron Techron frequently to reduce water condensation in gas tank

I would replace most of the rubber hoses under the hood if they havent been replaced

But I live in Dallas-I really dont know about cold weather that much!
