I used Blizzaks and highly recommend them. They are very affordable and the traction is great!

Yup. Bridgestone Blizzaks and Michelin Alpin are the two I would recommend. See here for specifications: zerothread/125907 (a bit down in that sticky thread).

I'd also recommend that you get some cheap steel wheels (remember the correct offset issue!) and use them for the snow tires. This avoid your having to mount and dismount and balance tires on the main wheels twice a year!

If ease of installation is a factor, yes I recommend a second set of wheels as well. But the good thing of having only one set is that you are required to have your wheels/tires balanced, as most people neglect this maintenence anyway.

Oh yeah, and I also have heard very very good things about Hakapelida's(spelling is most likely off). These are excellent snow tires and also drive very well on dry roads. Both these and the Blizzaks are very very quiet at all times, from my experience.

I have Nokian WR's on an 03. They're relatively quiet but not as precise as a typical summer or all season tire. However, considering what's available for the slushy stuff and nature of the vehicle they're an ok compromise. (ok performing snow tire you can drive year round and not worry about inclement weather or excessive tire wear)

I would have preferred to have two sets of wheels but my understanding is that the TPMS in the car can only be registered to one set and I didn't want the "pleasure" of visiting the dealership just to change wheels with the seasons.

the Nokian WR's are relatively pricey though ($250-300 each) and not as easy to find locally at a good price so the internet might be your only option.

I did the same thing. I used to have separate alloys with snows (the Accura, both BMWs, one A4, and both S4s), but I don't have the room to store an extra set of tires anymore. I have been very happy the the Nokian WRs, they are a lot better during the summer than the OEMs and they are enough for Minnesota winters.

Yes, agreed that balancing every 3 to 4k miles is a very good thing to do. But balancing four wheels is a lot less cost than dismounting and mounting new sets of tires every so often!
