Nothing special. All-season tires suffice...I run Dunlop SP5000's which are a decent all-around tire and I haven't had any problems in the snow. We had quite a bit this year, too.
You're up by Albany which is much further north. I've always thought studs were pretty excessive but then again, your winters may be far worse and I know that area is pretty hilly to boot (I drove through it last winter on my way back from VT).
Nevertheless, unless you regularly get icy conditions, a good set of all-season radials and perhaps a 30-pack of beer/cinderblock in the hatch will work just fine.
