(I'm posting this on the Murano forum too since they have similar windshields)

On Monday (3/2) our temps dropped down into the single didgets, and below zero with the windchill.

I have been driving my Rogue with the front wind shield defroster on full (and the floor) because the heaters comming out of the dashboard work to well.

Upon waking on Tuesday, I noted a crack in my windshield. The crack followed the outline of the middle defroster vest perfectly.

Now Nissan is saying something hit the windshield. You can not feel the 'nick' they say, but when they run a pin through the crack, the pin feels it.

They do not want to honor the warrentee.

First, does this sound like a factory defect or a cause from a nick from a rock (I have no recollection of anything hitting my windshield hard enough to start a crack).

Second, is anyone else experiancing this problem on the Rogue or similar vehicles?

Your insurance might cover the glass - check your policy to see if you have a glass clause and see if it covers the repair/replacement - a lot of auto policies cover this.

It does indeed sound like an insurance claim to me. Had that happen when I was camping.....woke up, crawled out of the tent, and saw a huge crack running vertically down my windshield. Paid my deductible and had the new windshield installed.

Granted we pay high rates, but here in MA windshields are covered (and replaced with zero deductible) by all automotive insurance policies. There is never a need to go through the car manufacturer.

When the windshield on my Maxima was 10 years old and had tons (160K miles) of highway chips and dings, I just told my insurance company I needed a new windshield. The next day I had a brand new one installed in my driveway, covered 100% by my insurance.

Check with your insurance company.

I would have to agree,If the crack does not/did not originate at the edge of the glass it most likely is from a pit/chip etc. However, the cold was most likely what caused the crack to "take-off".

I had the exact same happen this past Christmas on our Suburban. We were up north with the outlaws (in-laws) and I came out one cold morning to find a 4 ft crack running lengthwise across the bottom of the windshield about 5 inches up from the bottom. Neither end came close to the window edge. Originated out of a small pit near dead center of the crack.

Hopefully your Ins will cover your Rogue regardless of deductible.

Cheers

A word of caution: windshield installation is not straight forward and should be done by the dealer's repair shop. The windshield is a critical component of the overall vehicle safety design. Do not allow a non-Nissan windshield to be installed. Your insurance will cover the Nissan parts and installation if you insist upon it. Good luck, Howard
