On Monday (3/2) our temps dropped down into the single didgets, and below zero with the windchill.

I have been driving my Rogue with the front wind shield defroster on full (and the floor) because the heaters comming out of the dashboard work to well.

Upon waking on Tuesday, I noted a crack in my windshield. The crack followed the outline of the middle defroster vest perfectly.

Now Nissan is saying something hit the windshield. You can not feel the 'nick' they say, but when they run a pin through the crack, the pin feels it.

They do not want to honor the warrentee.

First, does this sound like a factory defect or a cause from a nick from a rock (I have no recollection of anything hitting my windshield hard enough to start a crack).

Second, is anyone else experiancing this problem on the Rogue or similar vehicles?

This can happen on to the glass in any vehicle in the extreme cold when you apply heat to it. This more commonly happens on the rear windsheild when the rear defroster is turned on in the extreme cold.

IMO, Nissan should honor the warranty, but comprehensive coverage on your Auto policy should take care of it if you claim it was from road debris. Seeing as that is what the dealer is telling you, it would not be fraudulent to say so. I strongly suggest you take your car to a shop to have a windshield put in. I have had glass replacement done in my driveway and once in my work parking lot and neither time did the glass seal up correctly. I had water leakage and wind noise each time and this was two different shops.

When done in the shop in a warm garge, it seems to allow the glue to seal and set better than in the cold outdoors.

Good luck! Please keep us posted on what the outcome is.

I think your insurance have to replace it and not the dealership. Who knows how the windshield got a crack.

Yup, the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear including accidental damage.

You could try another dealer, but I think you may get the same result.

Thanks for the advise.

I will be taking pictures of the crack and its relationship to the windshield defogger vent.

Then my insurance company will replace the windshield for the deductable.

If the windshield cracks again in the same place, then I'll take futher steps.

Check around, many of the windshield replacement places around here will wave the deductible, so it will cost you nothing.
