Sup Fellas~! I know you have to switch out the flanges when doing an LSD job, but I was wondering if you could also just open up the pumpkin of an open-diff, swap in the LSD and get the flanges and make everything work.... I have a 93 FB, open-diff (obviously) and I'm looking to install an LSD for my next upgrade....

PS: here's what I'm talking about....this is the part that I want to just swap into my open-diff's pumpkin/case and make it work....

yeah, you should be able just to swap the internals from one diff to the other, IE the carriers for the diffy(your picture), and if your output flanges are in good condition, it *should* work fine.-chet

So even if I have an open-diff, if I swap out the carrier it "should" work???? What would cause this NOT to work???? how about the flanges? do those have to be change still????

keep the flanges that are on the car now, just swap out the carrier. I dont see why it WOULDNT work, but new output flanges are usually recommended anyway.-chet

What tools would I need to swap out the carrier? would I have to worry about any seals???? Any extra-precaution needed on certain parts???

Download the s13 or s14 fsm on zilvia.net. http://www.zilvia.net/faqs/faqs.asp

I know the s14 fsm shows how to remove and disassemble the carrier. Also has the precautions and warnings.

Does anyone know for sure if the slide bearing shims or bearing preload are affected after swapping differentials? does anything have to be adjusted?

Some of that stuff can get a little complicated. Thanks

Well, I got the carrier...My question now is: Has anyone ever done this on their own??? CAN it be done on my own/in a garage??? I downloaded the FSM, and it stated that I need a slide hammer to pull the carrier. Other than that, I cant figure other things out. I have the carrier, but the picture shows it with teeth...I'm kinda lost from here on end. Any help would be appreciated. thanks~!

I can't confirm this, but I speculate that the existing shafts will not engage a VLSD if that is what you plan to use. They may engage the spider gears but it may not engage the coupling.

Huh??? Chet, I think you have this post confused with my first thread about the 280zx....I have a JDM 180sx VLSD Carrier now....so will the output flanges still work??? Or should I go out to find new LSD flanges before I swap out the carrier?

Now here's another twist, would it be possible to swap out the axles from a j30/z32 to fit in the s13 rear suspension setup??? Instead of the traditional output flanges, I think I'd be able to get a hold of a complete rear subframe of the z32 for cheaper...just a thought.
