Car: going fast, playing with my kids, spoiling my wife

Post

I recently purchased a 1990 240 hatchback. I have found a huge amount of usefull info on your site. This is my first posting. My car has 65k original miles on it, and other than a bad fender and a shimmy in fifth gear it is in pretty great shape. I have not as of yet made any mods to the car. I was planning on going slow since I drive it daily but have found a 1987 740 turbo. I can get the whole car ( which still runs and drives ) for less than $400. It seems that it will be worth the investment to pull the turbo setup. The problem is I am new to tuning and to turbo and am not sure how to do the work. Any info You can give me will be appreciated.

Is the tubo from the '87 740 a viable low cost option? What will I need to buy?How tough is the mod? What % power increase can I expect?Has anyone used this tubo on this engine personally?

Thanks for the help.

I had a volvo turbo that had the blow off valve built into the compressor To force air back into the compressor It was about the size of a t-4. I sold it for 100 bucks and the guy I sold it to replaced the inlet side and ported it and slapped it on a starion..That turbo now makes 16psi :( I should have never sold it

It was a reman from a box truck

The cost of putting together a kit is not made up of just the turbo. In fact, the turbo usually isn't the biggest cost, especially in a low-buck system. You will still need a manifold, piping, intercooler (optional, but highly recommended), some sort of fuel management if you're running any real boost, and miscellaneous hardware.

The amount of power you make will depend on boost and how well the kit is put together. I don't know any specs on that turbo, so it's hard to say how it will perform. I recommend you do some research before you venture into a project like this. I recommend "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. It's easy reading and gets into a lot of the basics and perhaps some intermediates of turbocharging. Enough that you should be able to at least decide what you want to do.

I wouldn't let anything from a 1987 Volvo 740 touch my KA24DE...our family has owned a 1986 Volvo 740 turbo since brand new, and while it has been pretty reliable in the chasis/startup, etc, we're on the 4th turbo right now (170k miles), and its just about to go...the units that are direct replacements aren't exactly "reliable." The car was maintained pretty impeccably as well, my dad is obsessive when it comes to car maintenance....The rest seems to work pretty well though. i just wouldn't trust the turbocharger...Sounds like a good idea though! 1986 volvo's...turbocharged, intercooled, 195 lb foot of torque...not too shabby!

if the engine is stil somewhat fresh.... for that amount of cash you could find a rebuilt t3 or t4. whats gonna kill you is the manifold....this is a custom job for the sohc. there are kits(few) and then you have to get them welded. im doing a sohc turbo that is getting to be a real pain because of the manifold...or is it my wife?;) anyways i have most of it all on my website and hopefully i can get a steady manifold maker lined up for all the SOHC people.i have most of that stuff on my website. http://www.geocities.com/prluv516/VuDuDoCs240.htmlif you care to check it out...
