It's a little bit like playing russian roulette, my brother had a car where the water pump was leaking, he drove it for many months watching the temperature gauge. One day he was on the highway, I guess the coolant corroded some metal and rubber part around where the water pump was attached. The whole thing basicaly gave out and my brother basically cooked his engine by the time he made it to the shoulder.
I would get it changed ASAP, the replacement engine cost in a J30 is very expensive new or used.
Besides you live in California where it is always warm, this will heighten the risk.
