Both vehicles have the 5x114.3 bolt pattern, however my FX35 has an offset of 40 and the M35/45 has an offset of 50. What does this mean as far as fitment; with a higher offset, will the wheel stick out further? Is +10 a major deal? Would anyone else do this, or is this a completely stupid idea?
I would strongly recommend not doing this. The higher number (50mm) actually means it sits further in - offset is measured from the centerline of the rim to the hub mount position. A larger number means that the centerline is farther "in" (since the hub of the car is in a fixed location).
I suspect this would probably touch suspension components. Or, even if the rim works, when a tire is mounted, it may well cause problems with contact (for example on turns). Particularly with low aspect ratio tires on 19" or 20" rims for example - where some of the error cannot be taken up in the tire profile.
Yes, the difference between 40 and 50 seems nominal, but you have to also take the rim width, tire width, section width, profile, etc., etc., into account.
A professional tire place can also do a fitment test for you too - and not just up on the lift when the suspension is unloaded (i.e., lower it and see).
