About to purchase an impact gun. Just one more question. Will impact gun with 240ft/lbs do suspension or lsd swap job? Say, pulling half shaft from axle or a bolt from suspension strut?RPM is at 2700rpm and starts at 2100rpm.

Yes, 240ft/lbs should be able to do the job. If not, some pb blaster with the impact gun should be able to get the bolts/nuts free.

What's pb blaster?

And if that gun is an electric, will it do the job?

as long as it's puttin down the torque, it's all good. pb blaster is a penetrating lube (not like ky, but for bolts).

Mid 200's in FT.LB, rating is pretty average for an impact guns. A 400 is a high end gun and is pretty dangerous not only to the parts your working on but the socket explosion potential. I try to stay away from those guns as much as possible. My gun I use daily in the buisess is rated at 250 Ft.LBS. The only bolts it has ever struggled with is the torque member [brake pad holder] bolts on the titans and armadas. That is only because they use the stongest lock tite known to man to hold them in place. It does remove them but it takes alot of impact hammering to get them out. Every other bolt on any car the gun has no problems, including axel nuts.

the 400ft/lb is at max setting, and i agree with the fact that it can be dangerous, but there are times when it comes in handy.

I bought a cheapy import sold under the Michelin Racing label. It's "rated" at 500 ft-lbs at 90psi. It couldn't remove the crank pulley bolt or the crossmember nuts on my Q. I don't think it's anywhere near its rating. Keep in mind that removal torque can be 2x or more as high as installation torque if the bolt's been in there for years. I've used electrics too. For infrequent home use they're better than nothing, but not as good as pneumatic.

Robert you have to turn the adjustment to 5 to get the max torque out of the gun. You also triggered something I initially didnt thing about. If you buy a pneumatic gun make sure its a dual hammer not single. Alot of the cheapies are single. Also the max torque of a gun is in the reverse setting. My personal choice for impact brand is Ingersol Rand. I have used them for almost 20 yrs now with no complaints. I still own my first IR and it still works like a charm. The only reason I replaced it is the arbor doesnt hold sockets as well as it used to. Its just plain worn from yrs of use. It has been retired from the shop and now is used at home only.

That specific one is IR231 They still make it and it is reasonably priced for an impact gun. You can find them at sears, harbor freight,OSH, amongst other tools suppliers as well as the big 3 tools suppliers [Snap-on,Mac, matco]

It only has 3 levels each way, and I have it set to 3. I tried 1 and it is noticeably weaker. And I'm pretty sure the package did say dual hammer!

i am also an ingersol guy. still using my original ingersol plastic gun. its actually got the craftsman label but ingersol makes it. its one of those high torque deals and it is dangerous to chrome sockets but i have never busted an impact socket with it. i still make it a habit not to put my hand around a socket when its "under the gun" so to speak. i am like tim taylor in that i like my gun to have big torque and i turn the air regulator up to its maximum setting of 175psi. its up so high that the volume of air is actually limiting working air pressure to about 145psi. i rarely have trouble getting stuff off though.
