Well I'll answer you this way. Last Valentines day while driving in an ice storm there was a section of the Garden State Parkway that was not plowed and had ruts of slush & ice all over the road. There was an SUV about 8 car lengths in front of me. I saw his brake lights go on and then do a double 360 spin, go across the parkway & crash into the guard rail. When I hit the slush with my G I downshifted to 5th & had no problem. Two Sundays ago in an early morning ice storm on my way to Newark Airport, I hit some slush on the NJ Turnpike. I ended up doing a double 270 spin, again downshifting until I got the vehicle going straight. The wife was screaming but it was kind of fun and fortunately there were very few cars on the road & I did not hit anything. I love having the control of a manual shift especially in bad weather.

If you will be on slippery roads, I would advise getting the X.I've owned 4x4's since the 80's. Most have been manuals. My first car was a manual in the 70's. (Have always owned manuals.)The 99 Exploder 4x4 auto and 03 Pathy 4x4 auto did the best on the slipperiest icy conditions for me. I owned a 01 Pathy 4x4 5 speed and 03 Pathy auto at the same time.Took them both out during a snowstorm and tested them. Took them both out later in the week after it all turned to a thick ice.The 03 Auto did better and was easier to drive even though the 01 5 speed had LSD.

I've owned several Jeep Cherokee 4x4s and they are an absolute gem in the snow. Our Exploder was great until it started living up to its name

I have to agree with you gents. Icy/snowy road don't risk get an X. As my old telco brother said he span 270 with his wife screeming after 40 years of driving. If he was driving the X it would not happen to him unless you turn off the VDC for playtime. But if the driver doesn't know how to drive he/she can have FWD,RWD or AWD it will loose traction and will be out of the game. AWD is not a miracle it is a close thing to it tho.

Don't forget even if you are an excelent driver you still make a mistake. The x helps you out a lot to reduce the chance. To loose your life and/or someone elses you only need 1 mistake.

God it sounds scary. Sorry I did not mean to scare you or anybody.

Our 99 Exploder was one of our most favoirte vehicles!!! It did great in the snow as well as the sand at the beach. I got rid of it cause my wife drove my kids around in it. Kept hearing that it really wasn't the tires but that the design of the rear end caused it to blow tires. Life's too short to take chances.......took a beating on it when I traded.....

That is totally true man. I will definitely attest that the X is great in the snow. It all comes down to the driver though like you said. I fortunately grew up in good ol Washington snow the hovers and freezing and ices over at night. I took my X up to do some skiing this past weekend and was watching guys in 4x4 Dodges and Chevy's loosing control and i was moving right along haha
