Hey guys, Just had a quick question......I have come across a nice Z31 rear end for free, I have heard before from someone that those rear ends will fit on our 240's....but i dunno if it was BS or not. So if anyone knows the real answer to this question i would appreciate it. THANX

It won't bolt directlty up, but yes it can be done. Does youre car have the abs? If it does its most likely posi and you dont need one...then you can sell it for a pretty penny : D

No I dont have ABS, but definetly have an open diff. Do you know what kind of modifications it takes to make the Z31 rear end fit?

That I do... The z 31 won't bolt up right now (obviously, because of the 5 star bolt pattern). The easiest, and most cost effective way to fix this is to get output shafts from a 240 that does have abs. Most, MOST all of the s14s with abs have a lsd differential. Pull the output shafts and put them in the z31 diff, the internals will match up, and you can bolt the modified, if you will, differential straight to your axles. You could go the Infinity J 30 route, but that requires a bit more time and effort...not my style, no reason to make a simple thing harder, though others will argue (no offense). Anyway, heres a pretty damn good write up on the operation. It tells you all and anything you need to know:

allright sounds good. Can I use non abs output shafts from my car on the Z31 rear end?

also is there any differences on the internals of the Z31 and Z32 rear end? like gearing?

Nope, the non-abs output shafts from your 240 have very different internals that won't match up with the z31 differential what-so-ever. To answer your second question, the internals of the z31(n/a version) and z32(turbo version) are the same, but the z32 has slightly pansier gearing than the z31 because if it having to accomodate the turbo. Nothing extreme, but definitely a hassle for us n/a 240 drivers. Even if you decided to get a turbo somewhere down the road, the differential that you have now will still be efficient.

While some people have had problems changing the axles out, don't be scared of it. If you have the proper tools it should only take 5 minutes per axle. If your axles are rusted into the hub, this may add a small amount of additional time, but changing axles is really no big deal with the pumpkin out.

oh yeah, the output shafts are also a little hard to get. No junkyard will sell you just the output shafts and the dealer wants a lot for them.

Yeah, Yellow jacket is right. You are too, the dealer wants a HELL of a lot of money for them. Theres a site online thats the cheapest you'll probably ever get them new. They want I think 127 for the shorter shaft, and 163 for the longer one. Its not to bad a deal, considering you can't find any anywhere else. But hey, check this out, if you have that differential and you got it for free, sell it. Find out how much the junkyard wants for the whole diff and shafts on a car they have(they typically will sell that much to you) and sell the one you have for the same price. Someone will scoop it up because it'll be pretty, and you'll break even and get the straight up diff to bolt in.
