Will a 2002 stereo fit my 2001 Pathfinder?

Hey guys. Like many who have come before me, the CD changer in my '01 Pathfinder (with Bose) died a couple of years back. I replaced it with a cheap aftermarket unit I had laying around, but that too has begun to give me fits. I want to go back to a factory unit, but I don't want the same unit that gave me (and everyone else it seems) the same problems if I can at all avoid it.

So the question is, does anyone know if the factory Bose head unit out of an '02+ will (A) fit into my '01 without modifications, (B) use the same wiring connectors again without modifications, and (C) allow me to retain my steering wheel controls?

For reference, the stock unit in an '01:

And the style unit I'm considering replacing it with:

If it won't work I guess I'll buy a refurbed changer to go back in, but no telling how long it'll last before it dies again. In any event I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

if i were u i would just add this to the 2001 stereo http://www.crutchfield.com/p_5...avf=N, i wanted to get this unit but i have a 2002 like the one u want

as far as i know it should work, when i was looking for the difference, the only thing i saw was that the cd changer plug was round on mines and sqaure on the 2001, but there was no seperate harness for it to work meaning the two main harness looked the same

btw. i have a 2002 deck like the one u want for sale if u want, i put in a clarion duz385sat,i did this because i wanted to use an ipod, no fault on the deck, looks factory but had to get steering wheel adapter which was like another $70

You'd really need to look at the back of the units to tell.

There is some "swap-ability" amongst Nissan/Infiniti models. I put the 2nd HU you linked in my 1995 Q45 with the use of a Nissan off the shelf adapter.

Hunt around and see if you can find some pictures of the plugs on the back.

Thanks Rex.

I'm nearly certain the plugs are the same, at least from my memory they are. I still have my original tuner/tape deck but I threw the CD changer away (after I had to cut it apart with a Dremel to get my CDs out of it). I'll look at it and compare it to the pics of the '02+ unit, like the one 02pathy posted, to see how everything matches up. I have a really good feeling I can get it in and working, my biggest concern is the steering wheel controls as that's the main reason I want to go back to a factory unit in the first place.

Well, I installed my '02 head unit yesterday (thanks 02pathy!). It works, but there are a couple of quirks, hopefully I can get them taken care of.

First, the steering wheel controls are "off." Only the volume works, and it's backwards. Up is down and down is up. The side buttons which control channel/preset changing and track change on CDs do nothing, nor does the "Mode" button which used to select radio/CD/tape. The steering wheel control plug was a perfect match, and had an alignment tab so it could only plug in one way. If I find there's a way to rearrange the pins to make it work I'd be willing to try that.

The second issue is the "PTY" button displays the separate equalizer settings (Rock, Classical, Sports, etc) but the sound doesn't change at all based on what is selected. Not the biggest deal, but music does sound a little muffled/echoed right now if that makes any sense.

So, anyone got any ideas?

glad to hear that u got it ok and on time too, i always worry about cross border shipping

that connector with three wires on mines are like this http://www.pac-audio.com/swixp...D=292 not sure if this will help, but this is looking at the harness from the adapter side not wire side, i am not sure if the color would match but browse around that site and maybe u might find what u are looking for

as for the pty button, i am not completely sure what pty is i seen something about it on here before but can't remember what was said

Yeah, it actually got here on Wednesday but I wasn't home to sign for it, so I had to pick it up at the Post Office yesterday. Thanks again.

Hmm, from reading through the '02 manual it doesn't seem like PTY actually changes any audio settings like I was thinking, it just allows you to assign a program type to that channel perhaps? Can't say I full understand it but at least I know it's not an installation problem.

Now if I could just figure out the steering wheel controls.

I don't remember who made the old deck, whether it was Clarion or another vendor. I thought it was Clarion though.

Not sure what you mean by a 3 wire harness. I just know the plugs were identical.

If I could locate a stereo wiring schematic for the '01 and one for the '02, maybe I could compare them to see if the pins on that plug got re-arranged.

the back of the deck has three harness connects, one for speakers etc..., one for power, remote etc..., and one for the steering wheel control which only has three wires on it and is the smallest plug and also at the bottom of deck next to cd changer port
