My 91Q with 132kmi. is running great , but I started thinking...I want to drive it for another year , and then maybe give it to my daughter when she turns 16 .You guys think 3gen. Q ( 2002 and up ) will be as good as our beloved 1 gen. ? I am talking from the quality , engineering , reliability , durability stand point . Obviously , it has the performance aspect covered .Also , you think it will be less / more expensive to maintain over the long haul ?Probabely the M45 falls under the same category .

I'm no expert but I can at least say that it doesn't have the chain guide issue and the injector problems of the first gen which would make maintenance cheaper right away. Don't know about over the long haul though. I'm sure Dennis/Fred/Greg will chime in.

True , but I had the chain guides , along with much other stuff done at no cost , under the extended Infiniti warranty, back at 70kmi.

Repair cost are a function of moving gadgets. The problem is manufacturers have had to hold the line on costs and give more features at the same time.

The sweet spots of the entire Q line was 1993, 1995 and 2001 as it is with all brands just before they change designs and models.....the bulk of the bugs have been worked out.

If the 2003 Q stays the same for a while but they really haven't sold many.........I'll bet they haven't sold 8,000 since launch in 2001.......every year from 90-95 they sold more than that, some years almost double-15,000.

I think the first Generation Q45 (G50) was designed in the 1980s when Japan was really booming, and expense of manufacturing and maintenance was secondary to the quality and excellence of the product. Now, everyone, except maybe BMW, who produces upper end luxury sedans for the masses is decontenting and dumbing down their offerings. I dont' think we will ever see another G50 nor a VH45DE from Nissan because of the economic realties of the marketplace.

I think Dennis nailed it again, although I would include the initial 1990 Q45s despite their flaws as they were revolutionary in performance for the times.

All said, would I rather drive a LS430, G430 or a Q45, M45? I would stay with Nissan. The compelling thing for me being I hate maintaining belt camshaft drives. It will be interesting to see how the sealed transmissions last. Maybe just the cost of driving a new luxury car.

The late second generation 1999-2001 Q45s (Q41s?) are the daily driver sleepers. Bulletproof is seen often in describing them. Not "modable", but then those people should really get a pre 1996 integra or civic.

So , the consensus so far is : NO , but there isn't anything better out there . you also seem to think that gen.3 will not become to be considered 'bulletproof' like gen.2 . Why? , gen.2 also shows a lot of cost cutting , compared to gen.1 .I will stay with Infiniti anyway , and get a certified preowned , just like I did with my 91Q . The question is what to get :Q,M,G,FX . I liked driving all of them , and could probabely live with any of them .This is not easy .

I think the current generation Q (orM) is an incredible value both new and of course (perhaps even more so) used.reliabilty is difficult to predict but keep in mind that in todays dollars the '94 Q was actaully more than the current Q selss for.

Again great value, (and the best headlights in industry).

Consider that the chassis and suspension of the second and third generation Qs are essentially identical. The second generation has a VH as opposed to a VK block, and the transmission can be flushed.

The jury is out on the third generation Q45. Look, it wasn't until 2001 that I could determine (with the invaluable help of this board, its predecessors and Q45tech in particular) that 1995 (or slightly less so, 1994 because of the one additional year's greater depreciation) was the model year to obtain a low mileage, well maintained Q45 in my case. That was six years after it was last produced.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t
