Most of the Wii's online features are free, including actual online multiplayer (though the friend system could use a lot of help).
Virtual Console prices are dependent on system and I believe vary a bit within that range as well. They're priced in Wii Points which, unlike the stupid conversion system that MS's Microsoft Points use, are worth a penny each. So 2000 Wii Points is $20.
For all systems but the Nintendo 64, prices range from 400 Wii Points to 900 Wii Points per title. 64 games are 1000 points each.
Gamecube games can be played "normally" on the Wii (and are NOT available for download from the Virtual Console library). The Wii has hidden Gamecube controller and memory card ports, and Gamecube games use the same disc slot Wii games do. You can even use the gamecube controllers with virtual console games. I HIGHLY recommend picking up a Wavebird if you plan on playing GCN games on your Wii.
The Classic Controller is definitely a worthwhile investment if you ask me. It's well designed, comfortable, and is great for all sorts of games, especially N64 and SNES games. Some Wii games even use it as an alternative to the Wiimote and nunchuck combo. Thrustmaster offers a wireless alternative that uses the gamecube ports if the OEM Nintendo's cord (the Classic Controller plugs into the Wiimote) bothers you.
Not every old Nintendo game is available...nowhere close. But the selection is good, and it's updated regularly. Also, VC games are not strictly Nintendo. There are Sega, TurboGrafx, NeoGeo, and other systems with games on the VC as well.
Here's a list of all current and some upcoming VC games.
