It sounds just like my ka did but much more quite...It only makes this sound when its idling. Could it be the timing chain?or the guide? Its right in front of the motor right where the timing chain would be.

im a little nervous because this noise was not here for the past week and now it is....can anyone shed some light on this???

Mostly likely the guide like all the other SR/KAs

is the timing chain set up like the ka, where i can take the top timing guide off and it will solve my problem.....I really dont want to have to take the motor appart......

Are the symptoms i mentioned in my first post common with timing chain guide issues?

lifters are not staying pumed up which can give you a noisy ticking lifter.i have seen that before.

Yeah lifters or the guide.

Unlike the KA, the SR only has one chain and one top chain guide.

Take the Valve cover off and you will see the guide. Take that off and if that doesnt fix the problem, put your motor at TDC and then push on the rocker arm pivot (the part that sits on top of the lifter) to see if it depresses. If it does, you need to take the lifter out and bleed them.

Just take the VC off and take the guide off. It takes maybe 30 mins or so.

Dont be afraid to rip your motor apart. You only learn by doing it.

This should be the timming chain guide. Sounds like "Marbles rolling around" right?

ok, i know there is a certain way to take off the valve cover on the sr20. Does anyone have a diagram showing in what order to take off the bolts? and I dont have a tq wrench, will this be a problem?

i have never taken them off in a certain way and just tighten them with a regular wrench .. its not hard at all ...... theres only a couple things on an engine that actually need to be torqued.

well I took off the timing guide and it is nice and quite Thanks guys for all your help, im so happy it's rediculous! I kept the guide because i was thinking i could trim some of it where the chain was hitting, should i bother doing this or just throw it in the trash...........The guide was there for a reason, so i dont really feel comfortable driving with it off.

no trash it...there is a factory TSB (technical service bulletin) the tells you to discard it all together.

wow, I didnt know that...so the guide is basicly pointless? I have one more question about the timing guide chain..............am I supposed to screw in the 2 bolts that hold the guide to the motor? I put the 2 bolts back in the holes because i was not sure what to do, But i would like to just get them out of the motor if at all possible, If one of those bolts get lose---my sr20 is toast!!!!!!!

you can take those bolts out. They are no longer needed if your guide is not there.

ok nice!!! no hopefully I can get them out tomarrow...i really tightend those bad boys in there so they would not get lose.....could have i done any damage because i over torqed the bolts???..........

Also...I have noticed from day one that my exhaust likes to pop..or kinda backfire when i change gears...is this normal? I have a 3in o2 pipe all the way back with a 3in cat. Is there anyting I can do to rid my ride of this noise?

And my last question....How much does it usually cost to have your timing set? I just dont feel comfortable doing it myself...I love my motor and dont want to be the one that fu(ks it up.

Thanks guys, your knowlegde has been extreamly valuable..I cant thank you guys enouph..

if you run an open atm BOV then pop is normal.

Also, checking timing is uber easy. All you need is a timing gun and a 12mm socket + ratchet.

All the SRs Ive driven all pop if they have aftermarket exh system. They all had open BOV and every single one of them popped.
