Hey guys. This is the first time i've had a problem with my 1989 240sx, so i thought i would ask you guys first. This problem just started recently, like on last wednesday. The car still works fine but it just sounds wierd. The best i can describe the sound, is like a clicking sound that goes the same speed as the car is revving. When you accelerate the noise also goes faster. Any ideas? Sorry i can't describe the sound and better; it just a hard to describe.Chris

is it ticking like from the injectors, or from the front where a bad timing chain would be?

the ka24e motor which came in the 89 and 90 nissan 240sx, has hydraulic valve lifters, which do not need adjustment, therefor being self adjusting.

check your oil level. if it's low, it will make that ticking noise. it's very anoying.

I just bought a 1993 Nissan 240 2 days ago. Thwe person who owned it b4 me did not keep up on its maintanence very well, *aka-the oil* I drove it home with some 10,000 odd old oil in it and put new 10w-30 in it when i got home. After putting this oil in it, i started it up and a new noise arose. It sounds like metal clanking on plastic of some sort. Now the engine does not smoke, and the sound seems like its coming from somewhere in the valve cover area. My father who is a great mechanic himself said that it is either bad timing or a junked lifter. Would either of these two probs fit in with putting new oil in the engine?

Thanx lots for the info

Metal clanking on plastic...sounds like your timing chain guide actually. Have fun.

I checked today. It appears to be coming from the front. Is the timing chain noise very loud? I can hear to sound even with the stereo on and the windows up. I'll check my oil level right now and see if that helps. I'll keep you guys updated.

I have a similar noise and its pissing me off. It sounds very valve-ish or lifter-ish. I just changed my oil, filled it to the max level, and its still doing it. It better not be the timing chain cause it was done this year.

Hey all. I'm a newbie and a hopefully (by the end of this week) newbie 240 owner.

I've been looking for somewhere to post a question regarding the potential car. The car I'm working on getting has a sound similar to this or what's been described in other threads, as a clicking, a pinging type thing.

The car will be throughly checked out by BCAA (here in Canada) which is a 150pt or so inspection but I'm just trying to get an idea. I'm a young lady and dad is not a mechanic but he guessed it could be a lifter problem, or something of the sort.

The car has been sitting a good part of the year since March (ran occasionally), the clicking was very noticable at startup and quieted a bit when warm and also at about 3000rpm it sounds. Does not effect the performance of the car, whatsoever.

It has: A new timing chain, tensioner and guide ( I'm quite positive it as the whole kit)New injectorsNew exhaust from the headers backOil change and quite a few other vital fluids.

The noise seems to be coming from somewhere just behind the fan.

It's an 1989, with 217,000KMS. Just (Saturday) failed Idle Aircare inspection and will likely get a new O2 Sensor and/or EGA Sensor ???

Any ideas? Thanks a lot and hope I've not put this is the wrong spot.
