Unlikely the belts themselves-I wouldn't replace them if they are in good condition. Low belt tension can cause noise. Check the deflection of the belts before replacing them: for Alt/PS, you should only be able to push the belt up and down about a 1" range.

FYI having belts *too* tight can prematurely wear shaft bearings in the accessories(alternator, power steering, AC compressor), however this would likely be a continuous squeel once they go.

Umm, clutch fan can make some nasty noises when they go bad.

M/T? A throw-out and/or pilot bearing can cause this, as well as input bearing to bellhousing.

Don't rule out power steering. :-)

I have a squeel that pops up every once and a while, I can't seem to get it to go away: I didn't bother replacing the pilot bearing when I put the new clutch in, and I think this is my problem.

whats the best thing to check first? i have never replaced the belts since i have owned the car and they have been on there for a bit and look a bit worn. so im going to replace them anyways. since it exhibits crappy acceleration i was thinking it had something to do with the clutch. whats the easiest way to figure out what part it is? btw mine is m/t and according to my buddy i bought the car off of got a new clutch 2 months before i bought it so the clutch is 8 months old. i am unsure if he resurfaced flywheel or replaced the bearings. didnt ask. will find out though.

Well since you need belts anyways, go ahead and replace them... the alternator belt is kind of a pain to get to from up above BTW.

See if that helps first.-Jamie

the belts or the throw-out bearing would be my guess.

Well if you do, make sure to replace both the throwout bearing and the pilor bearing. Lube them and the slave fork up real well w/wheel bearing grease(lithium-based) before installing also. Otherwise you'll be back at where you started.
