I have a 94 j30. It is a great, well running car except for one annoying thing. From time to time, the steering gets very stiff and difficult to turn. And then, all of a sudden, it will be fine again. About half the time its fine, and half bad. My mechanic is stumped, he has flushed the system. I already replaced the rack, and so that should be fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It sounds like your not getting adequte pressre..... How is the fluid level..

Also, there is a solenoid that activates the speed sensitive steering. When your on the highway the steering firms up. I dont know if this could be quirky or not, but if its electronic it can fail!!!

Where is that solenoid. That is what it feels like it could be.

Did you replace the tensioner pulley? If the belt has grease or is slipping, could be the problem. If it happens at full lock more frequently than when straight ahead on the highway, I would look at the belt drive first. Otherwise, maybe the solenoid.

I already replaced the pulley, and there is no belt noise.
