Hi guys, I've fixed my idle problems before (ended up replacing every damn sensor there was on that thing :) since it used to do it every 3 months or so).

My idle has been fine until 2 days ago when I noticed it to "start dropping RPMS" during stops. What will happen is the car will kind of shake one good shake coming from the engine. Sounds almost like the very first second of the engine when it rough idles. It will do that for a split second, then it's fine. Then about 2-3 seconds later, it will do it again.

I checked the ECU codes, first time it came out w/ 32 & 45, which was the problem I was having right after the hot shot header installation (about 1 month ago). To fix that problem, I reset the ecu, set the idle a little higher, and it worked fine for a month.

I checked the connections, maf, egr (not really sure how to check these connections, just made sure the valve was still intact, hoses in the back (not sure about these either, they seem to be good - no cracks, all in place).

Reset the ECU, put the idle back to where it should be (all the way down), drove around a bit, and codes are gone. However, the "sputtering/dropping/idling" problem is still there. I believe I'm idling somewhere between 600-750 or so.

It is not one of those life or death idle problems - like I had before where'd it would stall in the middle of a stoplight. It's just a little "spurt" of idle drops. The rpms don't fly all over the place, they hardly move at all. It's just the shaking coming from the engine, very weird.

My car: 89 240sx automatic.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

a/c on or off? dumb i know but could be compressor cycling. there is of course the vacuum leak possibility. spray the motor down with carbuerator cleaner and if the rpms pick up then you found a leak. is the car out of gas? that will do it. wiggle the harness and see if you get any probs. any extended cranking issues at startup?

Ah the infamous idling problems with the 240sx, well I've read more than post on these, including with the header installed. You have an automatic which seems to get a lot of post from different forums, lots of questions very few replys on how to fix.

However what you may do is. First did you weld your EGR pipe into the header? How long have you had the header installed, if you've driven more than 1000 miles with it on you can visually see exhaust leaks as they will leave a little burn mark on where the leak is coming from. It's no big deal, just carbon build up. That will give you an indication if it's from up top, check the bottom where it connects to cat and see if there is any carbon build up there. If you've had them less than 1,000 miles than I suggest you turn on the engine and feel for any air coming out. Yet another way:Test for leaks. Use a bottle of soap and water, spray it onto the manifold, rev it, any bubbles equals leaks.

This seemed to be the answer to fix idling after a hotshot header is installed, hopefully it will work for you. You should also be idling between 700-800 (ac being off) ...your not too bad.

This doesnt' solve anything really but when I idle sometimes below 700 rpm I turn on my headlights and it will stay a solid 800rpm :)

Right on the dot chris - misfire.

While I was busy trying to do what everyone suggested. I left the engine on and was poking around in the hood, grazed over one of the spark plug wires and it popped right off!

I must haven't been careful when I finished up my header install (which was about a month ago) and it slowly wiggled itself loose or something. Made sure that I heard the "click" when I popped it back in. Idle problem seems to be better for now.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
