Hello I am considering this motor for a swap into my 1973 toyota celica, yes a toyota. Anywho, I was wondering what the widest part of the engine measures out to be. I have 32 inches between the strut towers and about 30-31 between the fenders any help here is greatly appriciated. Please though I don't need the why are you doing this question it is something have been thinking of for a long time just never had a vg30dett handy for me to measure. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to NICO!

The best info I have on the width is via this picture:

The widest measurement, 651 mm, comes out to roughly 25.63 inches. The exhaust manifolds and accessories will likely stick out a bit further but you have at least 2 inches on both sides of the engine to play with so you should be ok. If I get a chance soon I'll get out the tape and check the measurement on the TT.

That will definitely be a cool swap. If you find that you can't get the DETT to fit I highly recommend to look into the VG30E or better yet the VG33E. The original SOHC VG's are a "hidden" gem. You can find them for dirt cheap and they are just as stout as their DOHC counter parts. The VG33 has great potential in that you can overbore them for a lot more displacement, nearly up to 3.8 liters safely. I'd personally keep it under 3.8 just to be on the safe side with boost. Either way will definitely be awesome in the Celica.

Be sure to post pictures of the progress!!

Wow thank you soo much. I would deffinitely appriciate the mearurement of width with the tt. What rpm can be had from a built vg30dett or vg30e? Also what kind of power can either motor take with the stock block? I also want to have a/c on it because I do plan on taking it to shows and such and want to be comfortable and such.

Do you know which of the engines you told me are lighter?

RPM limit for a built VG just depends on where you want to limit it. For instance, there was a GTP race car powered with the VG30E. Fully built they were running it to 8,500 rpm. I personally wouldn't aim much higher than 8,000 for the DETT and 7,000 for the 30/33E. When you design an engine to have power in the higher ranges like that you generally lose power in the lower ranges making them a bit less street friendly.

Stock block I believe they say the DETT is good to 500-600 and there are VG30ET's out there making 500 whp as well.

The pistons will be the first to go in a high power situation so those need to be replaced with some forged pieces. Rods would be good to replace with the pistons just for the added benefits of them being lighter than stock, as well as stronger. There are plenty of rods out there for the DETT and they can also be used in the VG30/33E. Only thing with the SOHC VG is that the piston needs to be designed to work with the DETT wrist pin, which is simple for the manufacturers to do.

As far as weight, the SOHC VG's will definitely be the lighter of the two.

I'm actually doing the SOHC VG in my Z32 because I absolutely love those engines plus it has the added benefit of being cheaper and much easier to work on because it is so compact:

Granted there's nothing mounted at the moment, the big thing is how much space are between the towers and the heads, quite a bit more space than the DETT.

Either engine will definitely be fun. The DETT is a little more, I guess you can say refined, than the VG30/33 and can most definitely make some insane power but I'm a sucker for the VG30/33 because it can also make a lot of power while being more compact, lighter, and cheaper. I actually bought 3 VG30E(T)'s recently for $225.

Wow only 225 not bad at all. What transmission should I use? Will a non turbo vg30e transmission hold the power that can be made from this engine? I will most likely go with the vg30e, now what did the vg33e come out of? Sorry I keep re-editing my posts I am bad with questions, I just want to make the best informed decision on the engine that I spend a lot of money on. What intake manifold would be best to go with as well. Wow those pictures really make the difference for me, vg30/33e it is for me. Do you think that this would be a good deal, 1989 vg30e, corresponding transmission, ecu and wire harness for 525? I am not really ready to do anything yet, but information is always great before doing the build. Who makes good aftermarket parts for these engines?
