For a daily driver, is it better to get wider wheels in the back or same size all around? I searched but i am still unsure. would 18x10 +40 offset be too big for s14 in the rear?

Same size all around. If it truly is a daily driver, commuter car, A to B type of unit, then I see no benefit.

Remember that your street beater still needs tire rotations on regular intervals, to provide longer tire life by helping even the wear from the front, and save you money in the long run. Sadly, having larger wheels or rubber in the rear will not unclog traffic, or make rush hour less congested. If it's really just the daily unit, use it as such, since you asked. You'll save money.

+40 offset and 10" width is too wide.

+35 offset or lower, with a nice solid 16x8 with some wide sticky rubber(245/45-16, 24.68 O.D.)(8" is pushing the limit of what Bridgestone recommends for it's SO-3, wheel might be a touch too narrow for some people) will give you better ride quality, better response under acceleration and braking, and will help keep your car off the theft radar.
