I have searched and after finding nothing i was woundering how close the 02 sensor has to be to get an acurate reading. I was hoping i could just take my cat bypass pipe and weld a bung in it for the sensor. that would be very convienent but not sure if it would work.

Which sensor and gauge are you using? It doesn't have anything to do with close, you can take wideband redings from the tail pipe. An EGT would have to br placed properly. I will be doing this soon and i wil either place it in the downpipe or straight pipe, I'll have to see which will work better as far as placement.

im not sure yet. i am either going with an Autometer or a PLX. i just started looking at the plx and it has some good reviews for how affordable it is. Yeah it would just be way easier to put it in the pipe were my cat would normally be. it would be really cool if i could because i want to get the gauge now and have it working and then in like 4 months i will be turboing my car and dont want to waste money getting another bung welded into my headers and then have it done again when i get a down pipe. thanks for your help though!

Like was mentioned pretty much anywhere in the exhaust is good EXCEPT for a couple of minor restrictions.

I have an Innovate LC-1.The instruction manual specifically says that the o2 sensor should be mounted On the top between 9 and 3 degrees. Like a clock.

You just don't want it angling where the sensor unit is on the bottom side of a pipe where condensation could get in it. If a wideband gets wet... the sensor is dead. Other then that and wiring/plug lengths that's pretty much it.

Taken from Innovate Motorsports website:

Install the oxygen sensor’s bung upstream from the catalytic converter. The bung must be installed in the exhaust pipe at the side or ontop, NOT on the bottom of the exhaust pipe. Best position is between 10:00 and 2:00 position.

On TURBO CHARGED vehicles:

Install the bung downstream from the turbo before the catalytic converter. The high exhaust pressure before the turbo interferes with the lambda measurement and the high exhaust temperatures encountered there can damage the sensor.

Do NOT install the Bung below the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position.Condensation can form in the exhaust pipe and permanently damage the sensor. 6 o’clock is the absolute worst position to mount the sensor.____________________________________________________________

Anyway, you want the sensor 18 inches or more downstream from you turbo or collector. Too much heat will shorten the life of the sensor. Here's where I installed my Innovate O2:
