I recently took a trip to WI for my best friend’s wedding. The wedding was in Milwaukee at a place called the Iron Horse Hotel, which is a very motorcycle friendly-place. It’s a mile or two east of the Harley Davidson Museum (which I didn’t make time for) and is located on a still-in-use railroad. The building is a renovated mattress warehouse/factory, so it looks like most of what I’ve seen of Milwaukee- a giant brick box. But inside… Wow. Quite a place.
Motorcycle/Railroad-themed throughout, there are tools and bits of railroad-type art in the main lobby. The chandaliers use old sprockets:

Upon checking in at the registration desk, I received a complementary sangria :yesnod , which was quite refreshing after my 6 hour drive. They change the daily drink- the next morning was some sort of melon liqueur concoction (can’t remember the name off-hand).
After checking in and having my car valeted (didn’t want to leave it on the street- $25 for 24 hours, motorcycles are free valet parking), I headed up to my room. I’m not accustomed to hotels costing $250 per night- I’m more of a Super8 kind of guy, though I’ve stayed in some mid-range hotels as well.
This was quite a treat though:

The room was very nice, thick walls- I never heard a neighbor. Shower was intriguing- no curtains or doors, just frosted glass with 2 heads- one top shower-head, one handheld (may need to return with a girl to make better use :naughty: ).
The view outside was fine. Not a whole lot to see, but the bridge was cool.

And last, but not least, the mini-bar, which I avoided like the plague due to the prices- $55 for a bottle of red, sitting on the granite counter with 2 inviting glasses and a corkscrew, and various other expensive items as shown:
Image
That’s a bottle of Grey Goose in the upper left, FYI.
Image
Quite the selection. And just a few feet away; a basket of other non-picturesque snacks.
The food at the wedding (at the hotel) was fantastic. The salad was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, with walnuts and raisins (or dates?) in a balsamic of some sort. Salmon was very good and I don’t think I’ve eaten a steak that was more flavorful. The open bar was nice to have so I wouldn’t need to pay for drinks- just tips.
Next morning’s breakfast at the hotel was great as well. Outdoor patio with big couches around steel framed wood tables. Omelette, potatos, turkey sausage, English muffin, berry smoothie… delicious. I didn’t need to eat until 12 hours later. Luckily, my friend put it on his tab.
Total money spent including tips and valet: $265 or so, but could have easily hit $300 or more. I’m glad I splurged without going totally nuts.
Great hotel, fun wedding, fantastic food; and that was just day one of my weekend.
The next day, I headed to visit a friend near Green Bay- we went to see some racing at Road America. Those pics will come soon, along with some random scenery pics and my car on its first roadtrip on the new wheels.

Not sure if they have an official star rating as in NY etc, but AAA gave 4 diamonds and its apparently won numerous awards.

So after the hotel, I made my way to my friend's place near Green Bay. I used to stop at waysides a lot when road tripping, so I decided to snap a few pics along the way. There is some pretty areas in WI if you avoid the major highways.
Image
Sunday was the Kohler International Challenge presented by Ford at Road America (http://www.roadamerica.com/Races/RaceIn ... .asp?id=27 - more photos, etc. here). Vintage race cars were the fare for the day, including some Formula Fords, old Indys, prototypes, and other vintage sport racers. There was also a group of modern racers that began the day, including some GT3s and Corvettes. Not too crowded because it rained in the morning. Sadly, my camera didn't take very good pics ($40 used for 3.2Mp- I'm not a camera afficionado anyway)
Turn 2:

Video link: that's 2 laps in IIRC- the GT3 had a giant lead by the end and had lapped the yellow Cobra with one lap to go. http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb59 ... ica063.mp4

Thunder Alley- this was my favorite spot:

And all the Concourse stuff- plenty of Datsuns, Porsches, Fords, and some amazing race machinery all around.

I love me some Porsches.

^ that is a RUF model- owner was very cool.

AMX- not sure why but I love the look of these cars.

Ford had a giant booth (obviously as a sponsor):

^no idea, but I'm assuming this has some historical significance. One of John Force's funny cars was there too.

Datsuns!!!!

And lastly. At the Ford booth, one of the cute female workers asked me if I wanted a free Tshirt and a chance to win a ride-along in this:
Image
Image

Yes I do!
So I signed up to get Ford Spam. About 2 hours later, I checked my phone (which I had set to vibrate, since it was generally so loud). I had totally missed a call from *Restricted*... Yes that means they called to give me a ride-along, but I missed it. So upset- not because I care about drifting, but because it would have been fun to rub all your noses in it ;)
Well, it was a great day, despite my sunburn. Can't wait to go to another one- SCCA runoffs are in Sept I think...
And I drove back home Monday:

All together, this was a great weekend. I realize I need more weekends like this, and now that my car is running somewhat satisfactorily again, I think its time for more roadtrips!

Awesome pictures!!!

Yes, Wisconsin is a beautiful place!

You mentioned the forest fire.. were you in Western Wisconsin by Black River Falls area? I was born there the same year there was a huge fire just south of town.

Yup, Black River Forest Fire in '79. The sign there mentioned that in another 15-20 years, there will be virtually no evidence of fire. I can't tell whether thats amazing or scary- that it takes 50 years to wipe out evidence of a forest fire, or that the forest completely recovers in 50 years.

Wisconsin has some very different parts. Parts of it look like Iowa and Nebraska.. flat corn fields and farms. Parts of it look like Cleveland or Chicago.. just old rust belt industrial city (Milwaukee).
But... Get up to the Northern and Western parts of the state and it's spectacular!!!

I could post a thousand pictures of Wisconsin.... It's a really beautiful place once you get away from Milwaukee and the boring southern portion.

Alfa Romeo GTV-6. I first saw one a few years ago, and fell in love with those classic 80s body lines...

Agree. Normally I drive through the southern part to go to Chicago to visit family- less cops on 90 than on 94- but I've camped in the northern part- north of Rhinelander. Great country. The Dells are a pocket of beautiful if you can get past the touristy stuff.
I'm kicking myself that I didn't stop by one wayside on my way. Basically a huge stone in the middle of nothing on the side of the road. I saw it too late and couldn't slow down with people behind me. Then there was no place to turn around conveniently.
Eikon, where are you located? I may have to make another trip and camp out before the summer is over.

I'm in Ohio now... By Akron.
I lived in Green Bay for ten years until moving last year.

One thing I will say... I don't miss the winter in Wisconsin.

It does look like a Lancia Beta, actually. This and the Sprint GTAs are Alfas I'd love to own

Eikon, I suppose I could have figured that out had I read the avatar info on the screen... Any recommendations on fun drives through WI? either toward Green Bay, neat MN, or near IL?

The Kettle Moraine area is in Southern Wisconsin.. about 45 minutes northwest of milwaukee... and extends up toward lake Winnebago. There are some nice drives and beautiful scenery in the Kettle Moraine area!

Next time you get up toward Green Bay, take a drive up highway 42 to the tip of door county. Then take 57 back down the east side to Sturgeon bay, then take county road U south to Algoma. Then back on 42 to Kewaunee, and then 29 back to Green Bay. It's probably a good 5 hours of driving, not counting stops (which you will want to do).. but is a beautiful place and lots of nice things to see and do. If you like cheese curds, stop at the Dykesville Bowl (no joke, the town is called Dykesville, and the bowling alley has as sign advertising tacos)..

The best part of the state for driving (like fun curvy roads) is the area between Madison and the Mississippi river extending up to Eau Claire and Hudson. That portion of the state is called the "driftless area" because during the last ice age, the glaciers didn't cover that part of the state.
Image

The area is spectacular.. Super hilly! The roads naturally curve up and down and around and over these hills and it's a blast!!! Start in Madison and take 14 to La Crosse. It's a few hours drive, and very pretty. But the fun part starts in La Crosse. You could spend a whole weekend driving the roads between La Crosse, Eau Claire and the Mississippi. Honestly, it's the Tail of the Dragon of the Midwest. Not quite as much elevation, so it's not as amazing as the mountains in TN, but it's pretty awesome!!!
Here's a website that has some routes designated.
http://www.wildcatrally.com/Routes/2009/routes09.html

Another great section is North of La Crosse. I was born in Black River Falls and my parents live there today, so this area is home to me.
Start in La Crosse and take 16 out to West Salem, then take 108 through the Mindoro Cut to Melrose. From Melrose, take 54 West to Galesville. From Galesville, take 53 north to Blair. From Blair take 95 to Taylor and meet up with P. The drive from Blair to Taylor is boring, but the drive from Taylor north on P to Pigeon Falls is amazing!! Take 53 from Pigeon Falls to Osseo, then 10 to Eleva... just to get you to Eleva, then take 93 all the way back down to Galesville. It's stunning!!! Then when 93 intersects with 54, take 54 West across the border to Winona, MN. Then take the river road (61) north following the Mississippi up to Red Wing, MN. It's a little straighter road, so not as much fun to drive, but it's beautiful! Red Wing is pretty close to MPLS/StPaul, so a fitting end to the journey. This drive will take you the whole day.. count on it! It doesn't seem like you cover a lot of miles when you look at a map.. but nothing is straight out there.

I made a map for you.
Image

I circled Buffalo County because I've heard the roads through there are awesome.. but I've never been on them myself.

Sweet. Thanks! I've always been so focused on getting to Chicago or back to Minneapolis, that I've forgotten to search out a lot of these roads. I will definitely check these out.
