Dubai Brit faces 6 months in jail for giving finger

A BRIT was last night facing six months in jail in Dubai after being accused of “flicking the finger” at an Arab.Simon Andrews, 56, is said to have lost his temper during a heated row with aviation student Mahmud Rasheed.

The Iraqi complained to police who immediately arrested Simon for public indecency. He has been banned from leaving the country since the incident last August.

Simon again protested his innocence before a judge examining evidence in the case yesterday. The hearing was adjourned until April 4.

A court source said: “Mr Andrews says the offensive gesture never happened. The Iraqi has never appeared in court to testify against him and there are no witnesses.

”Mr Andrews has told the court there is no evidence he did anything wrong and that it is Rasheed’s word against his. But eight months later the British man is still facing jail.

”He has been banned from leaving the country and has been warned he could be jailed then deported.”

A friend who agreed to surrender his own passport as a surety yesterday asked for its return so he can travel. But the court ruled Simon must first find another pal to provide another passport.

A British source close to the case said: “Police in Dubai appear ready and eager to arrest and imprison any Westerner for the slightest infringement of their medieval code. British people living here are becoming increasingly uneasy – the situation is intolerable.”

The Sun has broken a string of exclusives involving Brits falling foul of Dubai’s draconian Islamic laws.

In 2008, British IT firm boss Vince Acors and publishing company executive Michelle Palmer were put behind bars accused of having sex on the emirate’s Jumeirah Beach.

In January, a British man and his girlfriend faced jail for having unlawful sex outside marriage in a Dubai hotel after going to cops to report she had been raped by another male. And last month British marketing executive Ayman Najafi and Charlotte Adams were arrested accused of public indecency after stealing a kiss in a Dubai bar.

British Couple Jailed For Kissing In Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A British couple is appealing a jail sentence after being accused of sharing a passionate kiss in a Dubai restaurant.

Cosmopolitan Dubai has the most lenient social codes in the Gulf, but authorities can still crack down on people charged with pushing the limits.

Ayman Najifi, a Briton working in Dubai, and a female tourist were arrested in November after a complaint about public kissing. They were convicted of inappropriate behavior and other charges – bringing a month in jail.

The couple says it was just a "peck on the cheek." A court Sunday set the appeal for April 4.

In 2008, two Britons were sentenced to three months in jail for what authorities described as sex on the beach. The sentences were suspended.

Why move to Dubai? Money!!!!

A school teacher makes $60k with free housing over there. Good thing the housing is free, because it can cost as much as that salary per year. The economy over there is supercharged.... which is why a slight scandal or fear of any company having financial issues in Dubai sends shockwaves around the world in short order.

Most people who move there don't plan to stay there.

It's a good gig to go over there, make a ton of money (tax free), and then move back home. I'd gladly tolerate autocratic environs temporarily while I book 4x my normal compensation and then move home.

My uncle moved there and is one of their top engineers. He practically swims in money. My mom keeps pestering me about moving there after I graduate, but it's a definite no for me.

how exactly are you free in the us? makes me laugh exponentially. freedom pretty much means ability to live within social norms. true freedom is what happens in countries with strife (no gonads).

You'd really move to Dubai to make only 60K per year???

i was just about to say, that's a whole lotta money for not having to pay for housing. be frugal, wait a couple of years and you can have one decent savings account. invest it wisely and never work again.

Enough to justify living everyday in fear of getting arrested for petty stuff like kissing?

Is that REALLY worth it for a measly 60K? Come on.

Oh yeah, did you guys know Dubai is only about 150 miles of the coast of Iran? I'm definitely moving there now for my 60K.

You guys would actually do that for that little extra money? I mean, lets say the "benefits" of living there come out to like 100K in the US.

BUT YOU'RE STILL LIVING IN DUBAI. It's the f***ing middle east. Why the hell would anyone want to live in such an unstable, tribal, and dangerous place?

yeah, you're right, who would want to live in such a dump? oh, and i'm pretty sure that's 60k usd, not 60k dirham.

Dubai? Tribal? Unstable and dangerous? Hardly!

As long as you are making good money there, it is one heck of a nice place to live - if you can abide by the local laws.

I have plenty of friends (including native-born US citizens) who absolutely love it there! No housing costs, no taxes, cheap household labor, same kinds of "Western" stores and restaurants, etc., etc., etc.

Now, would I move there? Probably not ... but that to do with the fact that I am in a company that is only US-based, but not because any potential life-style loss!

Did I mention all the RIGHTS you don't have? They arrest "westerners" for anything they want, as shown by the OP. Middle east people (in general) despise Americans mostly because of their "lifestyle." The bars and clubs in Dubai were UNHEARD OF before this economy on steroids was built. It's the only place like it in the whole middle east.

Besides, do you really want to live that close to the "conflict" in a country the size of Rhode Island that sticks out like a sore thumb?

Once they're oil is gone, that place will have NOTHING.

awesome, i find pda to be annoying and childish, no complaint there.
some traveling website wrote:Prescription and over-the-counter medications are often considered illegal or a controlled substance. Keep your meds in their original containers and bring a letter from your doctor as a well as a copy of your prescription with you.
i'm not on any meds, no complaint there (this also applies to any foreign country. hell it applies when traveling within the us).
some traveling website wrote:If you are caught with any illegal drugs, or have the presence of illegal drugs in a blood or urine test, or even have a trace amount of drugs on your clothing, on your body, or in your luggage, you could be charged with drug possession.
another non issue.
some traveling website wrote:Don’t drink and drive there either. In fact, technically you are only allowed to drink alcoholic beverages at your hotel.
i prefer to drink at home anyways. it's a shorter distance to the couch/bed.
some traveling website wrote:Do not take pictures of the locals, especially women, without permission. And notice that many government buildings don’t allow photographs. They take this very seriously.
good, because i hate taking pics anyways. and let's not forget this

A few stories don't make it the general case for everybody there. Do you believe everything the media loves to jump on? I am certain that some stupidity does occur - it does not make it wide-spread or common.

That is why they are spending that oil money to make the place worth living in, for other reasons, after the money is gone. If it works, good ... if not, people will leave then.

Regardless, no one is going to force you to go, or even consider going there. Just don't let pre-conceived media-driven notions about "life outside the US - particularly the middle east - is s***ty" blind you to possibilities!

Solid point, Tito.

I'm looking into the proper garb now. I think I am going to try to come up with a turban/du rag hybrid so I can keep some of my roots.

I do not believe everything the media says AT ALL. I'm just trying to point out after HUNDREDS of years of their "strict" culture with no deviation at all from it, they start offering things like dance clubs, bars, etc..... Don't you think there will be some conflict there? It's not "westerners" running the country, it's those same leaders that were born and raised in that "strict" lifestyle, most of which they still believe in. Do you see any of the leaders of Dubai taking part in our "western" activities? Absolutely not.

Yeah, I definitely won't be moving there anytime soon.

I would actually like vacation there for a week or so though. The architecture looks absolutely stunning, even in just pictures. But it would be the last place I'd want to call home.
