I just purchased a 97 Pathfinder with a locked up engine. The engine will not turn over no mater what I try so I cannot get to the torque converter bolts. With that in mind I started tearing into the engine to see if I could get the heads off then maybe find the problem (broken rod?)

This is what I found under the valve covers: http://www.hardknockracing.com...ngine

No wonder it locked up! <shakes head>

my first car, an 86 cougar was given to me by a family friend, the guy was pushing 80 and owned the car since new....he kept adding oil. never changed it....just add it to "topper up".

the two tone paint also became a 3 tone. black on grey with sunspots on the roof and hood. then when i spray painted the spots with flat black it was more of a pearlmattessant black!

i miss that p.o.s.

We call that a Quaker State motor where I'm from. That's pretty bad, but I pulled the valve cover off of an old Ford LTD once that had so much sludge it left a mold of the rockers in the valve cover. I had to take the valve covers off with a prybar because the sludge had literally formed around the rocker arms. We pulled the motor because the crankshaft broke completely in half between cylinders 2 and 3 due to (DUH) oil starvation due to sludge. It also took out the main cap at that location and broke the front of the block off.

Come on board & get ya some big-badas$ mud or allterrain tires. you don't need aftermarket rims for nice tires (sorry to hi-jack the thread)

Isn't that lovely? <snicker>

The girl I bought it from had it right about a year according to the paperwork so....I am guessing previous owner(s) were the ones that neglected it...no way that happened in a single year. According to the odo it has 125K on it...

How is that even possible? Would you not notice at SOME point that your pathy just isn't running the same and think to maybe do something!I notice when i'm not running 91 oct! ( i know, i have a problem... i can't bear to put in 87, but 250lb-ft of torque just doesn't come with 87)

The electrodes on the spark plugs were pretty much gone as well...you could just barely see them (NGK-R) Maybe they figured that was why it ran like ***...

I wonder wha the symptoms were pre-sieze...if there was any warning or not <shrug>
