I have to admit, as much as I’m glad to come across a Q at the junkyard (usually there’s 2 or 3 in a yard, or 0), it’s kinda sad too. I see more of them in salvage than on the road.

I come across seemingly perfectly Qs, ending up in salvage. The other day seen a 2001 anniversary edition, but I’ve seen some that had mirror finished stock wheels, immaculate interiors, etc.

Some of these vehicles, I’m wondering are they repos, or possibly impounds. I even seen a couple with busted windows, making me wonder if they were stolen.

Seems the most common issues I see are bad valve cover gaskets, and heavy oil leaks...where they may have run out of oil perhaps. Others don’t seem to have a reason.

Considering mine was likely destined for the junkyard by the previous owners due to neglect (though nothing that was not easily repairable), perhaps some people find the costs of maintaining it to be too much. Thoughts?

If you're talking about the pull-a-part style yards, I think they sometimes buy cars from the auctions if they can get them cheap enough. This is just my guess based some of the markings I see on the windshields.

Probably trade-ins by the general driving public that must be more concerned about the screen size of the navigation/radio, and how many electronic whistle and bell features were packed in to their driving appliance.

And the very high cost of keeping old cars on the road that have lots of defered maintaance..that I think is the real killer

I haven't seen a Q in junk yard around here in many years.. There were a few between 2010 and 2012.. After that they basically disappeared.

Where is “here” that you live? I do admit I travel around a lot, and try to stop by salvage yards along the way if I have the time and the weather is not wet.

I find the most common places to find them are Arizona, Florida, Texas, California.

Most of the ones I come across look well maintained, but I either see well maintained, or extreme neglect. Some seem to have nothing wrong with them.

But things can go wrong that are just too expensive to fix. I am dreading the possible replacement of the cats. If I still have to source from Infiniti and no aftermarket offerings are out there my car which is very well maintaned will end up in a junk yard. My brother's 96' Lexus needed 4 cats for around $4k and he sent the car to cars for kids.
