People post topics and never reply. Maybe three or four days later they do.

I get alot out of this place. I put in an ipod adapter for 8 bucks (based off a how to post) and other things. How many other people have done it? 3? 4? pathetic. Yes this car isn't popular, but people just abandon posts. For example, the group buy Tein spring post. What's the status? Is it a go or not? Christ.

true, but the people that own these cars and are members of this site should participate and follow through. There are guys doing amazing things with these rides.

I belong to two other forums and in my perception this one has the most posts, activity.

Reality is to the eye of the beholder... Jim Goodwin, 2008

Whilst part of what we perceive comes from our senses from the object before us, another part (and it may be the larger) always comes out of our own mind... William James, 1890

I can agree with some of the above statement, but I'd have to say it is due to the hatred and smart talk from others(they know who they are) .... but yes, rare car especially the 03/04. Very slow side of the forum.

yeah, there are a few on here who go off on new members, especially if their english isn't good or whatever. quite a shame because why would they want to come back here if they get abused?

My take is that the somewhat flabby responsiveness of this forum reflects the unfocused market image of the car.

BMW, by contrast, has excelled in establishing a clear market image ("the ultimate driving machine") and attracts certain kind of core buyer. But Nissan/Infiniti has done a lousy job of giving the M a coherent brand identity. E.g., the engineers clearly worked at making it a great handling machine. Then their ad agency touts its lane-drifting technology - which may be impressive , but in fact is kind of repugnant to serious drivers. (Look at the reaction to most serious-driving road testers and reviewers).

So the M attracts a disparate group - variously enamoured of the looks, speed, handling, uniqueness, luxury, technology...which translates into an unfocused and therefore rather unresponsive forum becase we're all coming at it from different pesrpectives with different "stakes" in that car.

For me it was mostly the drive - the perfect balance of handling, speed & grace - w. a some distinciveness and techno-flash thrown in. But how many hard charging Beamer owners would even consider an M as an competitive driving machine, let alone believe it arguably beats their Beamer as a real drivers. cars. I didnt until i started read driving comparos and tried them out. God knows the Infiti ads didn't even give a hint.

I used to own two (old) Jags (now down to 1). When I exchange knowing glances at another Jag owner, I KNOW what he's feeling about his car and mine. (No cracks, please, about fact that we're both being towed to the repair shop). When I see another M, I just keep looking straight ahead - cause even though were in similar cars, I have no idea if we're sharing similar feelings about it.

If the Nissan/Infiniti bigwigs ever realize they've made arguably the best driving, best balanced performance luxury car in its class...and come up with a marketing campaign that tells that story...then I'll bet the resulting critical mass of M fans will make this one very robust site.

Folks, I am very careful to encourage proper behavior to members who post here - including new people! I edit posts as needed to make sure that we stay within the boundaries of good netiquette. This is, of course, not always easy, since there is a fine line between good moderation and censorship - and that line is different for everybody!

In general, I try to err on the side of less censorship, because (a) since we are all grownups who should "do the right thing" when it comes to our Internet behavior and (b) I want to avoid being too much of a censor (because I don't have the time to do so!) and want to avoid to remove what might be appropriate comments. This sometimes means I will not remove/edit/change things that might be considered a bit harsh or a bit not PC, etc. And it means that there may be things said that you may not agree with ...

But, as a result of my work (and the other Moderators), I think we have far more civil forums here (including our wild and woolly General Chat forum) at NICO than I have seen at just about every other site that I have ever visited. Hence, my active presence here for years (well before I became a Moderator ). Our CEO sets the tone for us Moderators and we follow that philosophy and site culture.

And, I will remind everyone: anytime, ANYTIME, ANYTIME you have a problem with a post here (whether it is mine or someone else), please feel free to drop me (or other Mods and Admins, including our CEO, Greg Childs) an e-mail - because we may have missed something.

We will look into it and act on the matter, if it is the right thing to do.

It may not aways be the outcome/action you might choose, but it will be a well-considered action for sure - whenever one of us is in doubt, we have a Moderator forum where the thirty of forty of us (yes, there are that many people working behind the scenes!) discuss and resolve issues and get input from others to ensure if we are doing the right thing as best as possible.

Now, back to the original poster question: the reason that this forum may seem a bit lighter at any given time depends on many things. Sometimes, it is just the time of the week when you post - many readers are on-line in the evenings or weekends only. Sometimes, the question being asked is rare enough that few people have answers - particularly on a model like the 2003/2004 M45 (there were very few of these sold in the US, compared to other brands and models and years).

BTW, our Admins and I have looked at other M sites, and, in general, we have better traffic and posts than pretty much all of them (for M-related traffic that is) - that is when you average over a long enough period to make the statistics meaningful. A number of the smaller M sites have ceased to exist, or nobody is keeping things going, and the posts are ancient and membership is minimal.

At NICO, the effort is to keep a good balance between technical depth (see our articles section for example), a large and active membership, lots of coverage of all Nissan and Infiniti models, and also be a "good place to hang out" on a forum - PG-13 as much as possible. This will suit more people than if we got too specialized or allowed a free-for-all on everything.

Hope this makes sense, and if not, please feel free to send e-mail.

Thanks!

Z

that makes perfect sense and I thank you for the job you are doing. I have looked for other Infiniti sites and this is the one I come back too.

I did like the prvious post about the owners of these cars not sharing the same feelings or interest as others. The bmw comparison was spot on IMO.

Szhosain, IMHO you are doing a great job as the moderator of this forum. I consider all of us pretty lucky to get so much of your time.

Thanks much, Paul!

It always helps to have validation that we are doing "the right thing" by many (ideally most) people here.

I definitely second Pulc's comment. Though I think the nature of the car attracts a disparate and therefore not terribly interactive group, this is by far the best (only) Infiniti forum of any real interest or value. Great job.
