Hmmm ... at my company, you begin coverage on the 1st of the month following your start date. Differs from other places, I guess, but it is worth finding out more info.
Remember that stuff that happens before the coverage begins is sometimes considered "pre-existing" condition, and not necessarily covered. Although if you were covered by another policy till your last few days at the previous job, then you may be okay.
I know this is late info for you, but when changing jobs, it is best to ask your new employer about when coverage starts. And, if it is late enough, then ask the old employer for COBRA insurance coverage extension for the intervening period - this is often free (for 90days perhaps?) or relatively low cost.
BTW, COBRA can even be initiated after you leave the company, as long as some time period has not elapsed - I forget the details. If you do need extensive medical work done, then call the old employer immediately and ask for COBRA extension right now so that you have some coverage.
Also, note that COBRA insurance coverage from your employer is a Federal requirement, so don't let them b.s. you out of it.
