why is there a long and short Oil filter for this Pathfinder

I have been getting oil filters from Nissan for years, its a 2003 V6 VQ35de engine and they always gave me a long filter , now the oil filter I just installed to day is shorter , is this OK to use or what. they parts guy says it the newest updated filter out for all Nissan's with the VQ35DE motor? what gives here?

Yes, there are 2 oil filters available from Nissan for the VQ35DE. My parts counter guy was confused by it also. No clue which one is better, if either. I personally opt for the larger one, under the naive assumption that there may be more filtering media inside.

Yes I agree , how ever I use conventional Oil because for some reason the manual for my 03 pathfinder says do not use a synthetic oil, anyway so I change the oil and filter it every 4,000 miles
yet next time I will give the part number of the longer filter to my Nissan parts guy and ask him . in which he probably wont know , but your answer seems most logical of all , Id rather have more filtration than less. and when you read the truck s and cars they short filter is recommended for it amazes me that for some of the huge truck with large engines they recommend this little short filter also,? Hmm Thank you

They updated the filter size. I prefer the smaller one but thats just me.

So Zach - does this mean we cant get the longer filters any more ?

I think the longer larger filter would be more efficient than the shot one.
