Actually, Nissan set the Cayman S, not the Boxster S, as the target for the 370Z.
The two cars are aimed at two completely different types of buyers. A 370Z can be purchased somewhere in the neighbourhood of $30K where a Cayman S runs nearly twice that. I went to the Porsche website and did a very limited configuration on a Cayman adding a leather interior, bucket seats, bi-xenon headlamps, auto-dim mirrors/rain sensor, ceramic brakes, the 7 speed dual clutch transmission, and an LSD and the price jumped to $80K - that's GTR territory and I went very mild on the options. Well, sort of mild...the ceramic brakes are an $8K option. This keeps in-line with the cars though, the sport package from Nissan that adds the monster brakes is a little over $4K but adds more than just brakes.
I test drove a a few different cars before I picked up my Z, including an S2000 (not livable enough on a daily basis and its got no guts on the low end), a Miata (just didn't like it even though I always thought I would), an MR2 Spyder (like the S2000, only moreso - but great on gas mileage) and a Boxster S.
Before I go into the last part, a little about me. I love Porsche. I used to live 30 kilometers away from their HQ, have take the factory tour a couple of times, drove a a friends 928S on the bahn faster than I should have ever driven and remember being stuck in a stau on autobahn 81 and looking over at an unfamiliar Porsche with wrap on the wheels and no emblems only to find out later that week I had just seen the new 959. Its still one of my favourite cars of all time and though I'll probably never own a 959, I will eventually have a Porsche in my garage. That being said...
The Boxster was nice. It had the best steering feel I've encountered on any car and it would certainly be easy to deal with on a daily basis. But I felt like I should be getting more for money than just a badge from Zuffenhausen, mediocre performance and a Christmas card from my mechanic thanking me for extra money in his stocking.
Like Evil said, the Z has a heritage and a shared camaraderie that most car owners will never understand. Even before the widespread use of forums as a gathering place for gearheads and car fanatics Z drivers were having get togethers. Sure Corvette and Mustang owners have similar gatherings and events, but they don't feel the same. Maybe its something to do with the import status and the Z being the first bang for your buck import sports car. Whatever it is, the only other car, to me, that will ever have the same "mystique" (for lack of a better term) is the Porsche 911.

For $80K I can get a new GTR, a Corvette Z06 for $75K (base for $50K), a Mustang GT500 for $50K and a few other rides I didn't mention that will trump a G or Z.
