Can you be more specific? When you are in your car can you smell it than? How about when you turn on your air (smell it coming from the vents).. The fuel hoses could be cracked from age or the clamps could have loosened and it is leaking a small amount from there.. Another possibility could be the injectors tend to leak a small amount of gas due to the seals shrinking or swelling from age. Not to sure about this, but the fuel pressure regulator and damper could be leaking as well (again I'm not to sure about that just going by memory from a while back when my buddy had a fuel leak) I would try and check all the fuel lines you can see. If no visible leaks can be seen, further investigation should be taken, and the issue should be fixed asap., as leaking fuel can be dangerous under the right circumstances. On my 93' N/a I had this text book fuel smell inside the car and under the hood (really strong threw the vents) and it was 2 bad injectors that were dumping excess fuel into the cylinders. I hope this isn't the case for you because injector replacement is costly. Good luck!

I just had this problem and did not know where the smell was coming from either i checked all of my lines and hoses and low and behold....... it was a faulty gas cap. Try a new one that solved the problem for me... now on to my next set of issues..

I just fixed mine! turned out it was a bad O ring on one of the fuel injectors. It also possibly could be an exhaust leak before it hits the cats.

If it's in the cabin and not under the hood, then check the fuel hoses to the tank. They will leak from time to time. Not bad, but enough to smell up the cabin. They are located under the package shelf on the driver's side. You have to pull the interdior plastics in the rear to get the shelf out (usually). Then remove the cover and you will find 3 hoses. Make sure they aren't cracked or the clamps aren't loose.

my TT has the same problem. It smells like fuel in or out of the car when started and goes away, but no smell from the vents. The previous owner took it to the shop and said it was some kind of a fuel sensor. I don't know but mine won't pass smog because of that and i live here in california.

The only OEM fuel sensor is on the fuel temp sensor on the fuel rail, and it's sealed off from fuel flow.

OP and all, unless you have a faulty gas cap, your most likely source of fuel smell is going to be the hose clamps. In colder weather, the hose shrinks, the clamp does not. Tighten all fuel hoses and your smell will most likely go away. Do note that not all clamps are easily accessible.

That's about all you can do. You ever look at a diagram showing all the fuel lines? They're everywhere and it's not like there's a definitive one that always leaks.

This is a good place to check if possible, this hose is known as the "$#&@ bastard hose from Hell" and connects the fuel rails and is VERY difficult to access especially if the hose clamp screws are inward towards the motor and can't be accessed with a screwdriver.
I had the same gas smell issue as many of us have had, and tightened everything possible from a fix at TT.net but could not get to the DS hose clamp...my gas smell is gone 90+% of the time, but on very cold days sometimes I get the smell again for a short time until she warms up...I suspect that hose clamp (the one I could get to was indeed loose) or perhaps the interior hoses BiggTDogg mentioned (Thanks Big T!) and recommend you take the time to hunt up the fix at TT.net and do this service.

I checked every line, Next step for me is to check the injectors. There MUST be a leak in the rings... they are 19 years old :/
