the last couple of days has been 90 plus and the 240 has been having trouble. the temp needle goes all the way up to hot and the a/c starts blowing warm air. i checked the coolant and the level is fine but it's a brown color. is it normal for the coolant to be brown?

brown = rustflush your radiator and also check your thermostat.

Had the same problem with my 90 hatch. I flushed the coolant, replaced the water pump and thermostat, blew out the radiator, and it still overheated. turns out it was the clutch fan. Try that before you go into the thermostat or water pump.

Also don't overlook the radiator cap itself. That is the #1 problem with 240's over heating!

Ya, I just put a new fan clutch in my 240 this weekend. It was only starting to overheat while I was stopped at a long drive through line. So, I first thought thermostat, but I had just changed it not too long ago. I got home and just gave my fan a light spin and it was pretty free spinning. It's an easy test to do, if you fan moves freely without much resistance, the fan clutch it probably shot.

Also, an easy way to check if the water pump is working take off the radiator cap (when the engine is cold!) and turn the car on. If you see coolant flowing then you know your pump is working.
