There's another version of that that I've been trying to find, but I can't. It's even harder to tell that its not quite right. Even the math won't give it away unless you calculate it out to three or four decimal places.

Isn't it cause the slope of the triangles is slightly different between shfting the triangles around to form the second rectangle?

If you were able to recreate it on a large enough scale, you would see that at the point where the triangles run directly next to eachother in the second (smaller) arrangement, they actually overlap. There is a minute amount of overlap, but it's area is large enough to reduce the overall area of the larger rectangle and make it appear as though it has shrunk.

In the other version I have seen, the loss of area comes from the top and one of the side edges, and is so minute it is nearly undetectable.
