so i took out the three "anti-skid" relays from under the hood, but my car still wont get sideways, i feel it cutting loose, but then it just straightens up like something is holding it back. i can drift pretty easily in the rain. is it because i dont have lsd? or is there something else making my 240 unable to spin out?

Both wheels in the rear need to be spinning to drift. YOu have an open diff, remedy that with a welder or get a j30 diff.

anti-skid relays are for abs, not traction control. drifting is easily possible with an open diff. you're just doing it wrong. increase entry speed, lower gear selection, e-brake, etc. watch some beginners tutorials or something.

I absolutely love this thread.

im sure there are a million things you can do without spending a dime. but here are a few.

- my first recomendation is to add tire pressure, stiff tires slide easier.

- and then power into it more, dont let off the throttle as you start to oversteer.

- also enter into your drift with more speed and a straighter line, before engaing the turn.

- try a reverse drift first, by whipping the wheel one way then steering back, its not easy to do consistently but it will work... dont go to fast when you try this. ease into it.

- if your spinning out, you're getting there.

- watch drift bible on youtube

- ask teddy, he was drifting like a prodigy on a SOHC KA motor... so you can def do it.

if this is your DD don't weld the diff. if you want to drift around town get a vicious diff. but if its not your DD then feel free to do whatever you want.

viscous diffs cost quite a bit, could i get it from a junk yard? and whats so bad about putting welded differentials on my daily driver? will it then be too easy drift?

you can get a viscous from a j30, lsd equipped s13 or s14 (vlsd was only available on s13's with hicas). welded diffs like to break loose all the time. if you're just trying to get around, it can be very annoying, especially in the rain.

doing it from zero is just a burn out. drifting requires some speed as you are sliding in motion.

there's nothing wrong with your car...diff or no diff, you can drift it...if you can't, that means you can not drift yet because you have not learned how to do so yet.

keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it, yes a diff will help tremendously but it's more fun to say you have an open diff when you do finally do it.

If you want to drift from a dead stop, like I said, weld the stock diff, it isnt that bad to drive dd with a welded diff so guys like donaldhall here are feint of heart and cant take a little tire chatter around a turn. If you cant take a little tire chatter then get a j30 diff and install.

No matter what you do with an open diff the car is going to continue to try and track straight after a slide because there is only one of the rear tires with broken traction and the other is trying to grab traction. Take the diff out of the car, take it to a friend or shop that welds, and ask him/them to weld the spider gears together. After re installing the diff, change the diff fluid at least once very shortly after reinstallation to be sure all the weld wire is out.

i have a mainly stock SOHC KA and can drift still..still learning but ive done it a few times pretty decentlyhit your turn in first or second with a good speed and maybe give the clutch a quick kick if youd likebut if you've got good speed/angle you will drift

I have open dif i go sideways =) but yeah watch some beginner videos for kick clutching and different things like that entry and exit's you will get the hang of it BUT if u weld your dif it will be easier to send it sideways instead of having a 1 wheel wonder!

approach turn in third,

downshift to second using heel and toe as you take it...maybe give it a little flick

kick the hell out of the clutch and use throttle and steering input accordingly.

This has worked for me better than ebraking....stock suspension stock diff stock engine

Practice in the rain but be warned that stock 240s actually love to *understeer* in the rain so if you hit the turn just flicking it or without using ebrake you wont be going sideways, you'll go straight into the curb

you could also get another differential from the junkyard and weld it, then when you dd the car you have the open diff. and when you want to drift it just switch to the welded
