okay well im back again.ive noticed with the way my timing chain is rattlin its over heatin and i know the water is gettin in the oil through the cover from the chain but ive also noticed it surging.thats what im tryin to figure out.whats causing it to surge? it might be from the injectors because some mechanic said that might be the issue.but i need to know for sure.my rpms arent jumpin, its just you can feelin boggin at idle. i know i just need to swap the motor but i cant find a replacement.so in the mean time i need it to run as long as it can hold out.i gota new timing kit but everyone says its a 6 to 7 hour job. if anyone knows a way to fix it let me know.thanks again for the help!

Lesson in life: with cars, unless you can do it yourself or know the mechanic, you're going to have to pay a lot of money.

Most of this stuff you can learn as you do it. There are plenty of threads on this forum and others that show you exactly how to do what you need to do.

How exactly is antifreeze getting into your oil through the timing system? There are no coolant lines up there. If there is water in your oil it's not the timing chain's fault, you have a blown head gasket. Probably what's causing you to surge as well. It could be injectors, but if there is coolant in the oil, you're problem is bigger than just injectors.

And finally, if you really want good answers, tell us a bit more about your car. What year, what motor, is it an SR20? Describe the surge, where does it come from, how does the car act? Are you calling the bogging of the car at idle "surge" or what?

My honest opinion though is this: the timing chain top guide is rattling like it does on all these motors. You probably don't need a timing set. You have water in your oil, since both the timing set and the valvetrain are oil cooled, there is no way that water is getting in the oil there unless you drive without a hood on during the rain and have a leaking valve cover. That being said, I think your headgasket is gone. I don't know how to check for that, I'm sure somebody does. Headgasket and timing set should solve your problems.

you have a car that is 20 years old, its gonna have some issues. mine does, many other ppl have problems but thats across the board with any car. it what makes you a true gearhead. one minute your hardcore in love with it the next you cussing scrapping your knuckles under the hood yet again. but its fun that way

I had the exact same thing happen to my old kae, the head gasket it proably ok, but here's the bad news.

Heres whats going on: The timing chain guides have broken, and probably fell into the pan. Not a huge deal, but then the chain smacks the front timing cover untill it wears a hole through the aluminum. Then you get oil and coolant mixing. The loss of pressure on the cooling system results in you over heating. I don't know about the bogging idle, but water in the oil, crankcase vacuum/pressure problems, you can take your pick.

This was not a fun job with the motor in the car. If you can work on a stand it will shave about 4 hours off the job. You will need a bunch of gaskets (including a new head gasket) and a new/used front cover. Good luck

u can do a compression test. their is also another test that tests for exhaust gases in ur coolant, if it shows for exhaust gases, that means u have some sort of blown gasket, cracked/warped head or block.

I say the surge is a timing issue. If it comes into power at a higher RPM Id say timing. time to junk it. I never got mine figured out even after a timing chain fix.

its sounds like you motor is loosing comprression, thats why its mixing and surging, so its time to rebuild or find another motor, no sence in trying to patch it up
