Why do people say they have "headers" when they only have one?

Why is it that people say, "yo my civic has headers" or "I just put headers on my 240!" and all of that?

It all started with ricers at car shows a couple years and it kept aggrivating me and now I see it on tons of websites for companies selling them. What has happened? A car with 4 cylinders can not have headers, they have one, so its header.

Anybody else notice this or is it just a cleveland thing that the kids tuning cars are dumb?

No it happens everywhere and I have been known to accidentally say the same thing from not thinking about it

I think it's just a misnomer, as when someone calls a facial tissue a Kleenex or an adhesive bandage a Band-Aid.

It may also be that some early header set-ups for the Iron Duke and such were actually 2 piece headers for a dual exhaust system. Though I think it's more likely the current guys never knew or saw these.

Well I guess I could see how they say they have headers for their 240, a lot of people think it has a 6 cyl. Its sooo weird, people are always asking me if my car has a 6 in it. Anyways, yeah Jerry I've noticed it a lot. Haha kind of like when Dave didn't know the exhaust manifold and header were one in the same.

I know what you mean about the plural crap. I mean, there car's can't even flow enough exhaust through the header that they have. So why would they need to say they have 2 headers

I have headers for my Z and Headers for my Altima and headers for my s2k OH WAIT S2K is a 4 banger I MEAN HEADER.

Does it really upset you that much. I call it exhaust manifold to confuse the unknowing and to sound smarter. lol

Ford used them in Europe in some of their cars and the ford V-4s (two stroke and 4 stroke) were also used in some Saab vehicles.

Useless trivia of the day.

Edit: I think Saab is the only example of a fairly recent V-4.

lol ok technically there are v-4's out there. But i'm talking kids in sport compacts and stuff with I-4's in them (basically any popular entry level tuner car).

I think we all have pet peeves, things we don't like to hear people say, and this is yours. My suggestions would be when they say "headers" ask (in a non-sarcastic tone if possible ) did you swap motors?

To get back to the question at hand...I think it all goes back to the days of muscle when street tuning became popular. New exhaust manifolds-->headers...and I guess it stuck. Also, I've heard and seen pics VW V5s. I need to research the engine to drop some knowledge on myself. Peace.

Nope. First, 180 degrees is not a V in any way shape or form. The boxer engine is a FLAT 4 not a V 4. It's always been called that, since before Subaru was ever conceived. Flat 4. Still has two headers though.

My car has headers. My truck has a header.
